Whatcha drinkin?
I have a Bourbon Old Fashioned. I took cybercoma's advice of using sugar syrup instead of a sugar cube, and I agree 100%. The last time I was at a bar, the bartender had a slab of wood... she used a blow-torch to burn the wood and slammed a frosted glass on top of the smoldering wood to collect smoke. I haven't done anything that elaborate with my own Old Fashioned.
On a slightly related note, does anybody know where I can buy or order orange bitters? I have Angostura bitters and grapefruit bitters. And I sometimes see cucumber bitters at my local fussy-foods store. But never orange bitters. I find this odd, because Angostura and Fee Brothers make orange bitters, and I think more recipes call for orange than grapefruit or cucumber... yet I never see orange bitters in stores. Are they available online? Can I buy them online, considering they have a high alcohol content?
