Hmmm, and I thought *I* had a dry sense of humour.

Steely Dan did a brave and not entirely unsuccessful cover of the Bubber Miley claasic East St Louis Toodle-oo, so I will cut them some slack for that.

The Colgate Comedy Hour was pretty funny. Eddie Cantor was always hilarious.

Prince Philip 99.

I'm glad I am (currently) watching The Crown so I have some context on the strange life he had.

Basically, a hot greek guy, the queen fell in love with him when she was 13.  If The Crown is right, he didn't really have an idea that he would be almost powerless in their marriage and so he acted out early on, until an "understanding" was made.

I would love to live to 99 and be outlived by my wife and kids.  It would be the best thing to happen to me.

Very sad although we all knew it couldn’t be too far away. Old school. Like the Queen, someone who understood the true meaning of duty.

I like and respect Prince Charles a lot but I can see how his sense of duty has waivered at times.  Prince William seems to have it though, for better or for worse, he is following in his grandmother's footsteps.  His whole family is like a postcard from old school royalty.

RIP Prince Phillip.

I think Charles is underrated by most and will always have his unfortunate marriage hanging over him. He is also the longest living  successor and will be viewed from over 70 years of life when he takes the throne rather than his mother’s 26 years.

The Crown episode we last watched covered his horrible schooling.  It felt like a punch in the stomach.  :(

It was the same school Phillip went to and he excelled there. They are two very different people.

His marriage actually is where he didn't waiver from duty.  He married the person his family chose so that he can provide an heir and even though it didn't work out, he gave it a try.  He has obviously always loved Camilla all his life and said it's 'non-negotiable' that he marries her.  The cheating aside, I think the way he's loved her is very romantic.

Where he waivered from duty is in his political stances.  He left his mother to show up alone to meet Chinese president.  He has been ardent supporter of the environment and other faiths.  He was working with immigrants and impoverished kids long before meeting Diana and when it was more controversial.

The parts of his duty he waivered from I absolutely admire and it makes me like him even more.  I'm just saying he hasn't always been neutral like a good little royal which is fine by me since I support his causes.

I think he will make a fantastic king, it's too bad so many people can't see beyond his marriage.

I think the monarch is mostly only relevant as a symbol.  I think their personal lives should be totally ignored unless it interferes with their duties.  I don't think we need to replace the monarchy or anything, i'm just saying their role in society is IMO very limited as it should be.  Their duties should be relegated to acting professionally and courteously especially when performing duties, and acting in the best interests of the country on the very rare occasion that they need to act politically.

I know literally nothing about Phillip, which I think is probably a good sign because it means he hasn't messed up much.  Nobody should care much about him unless he somehow interfered with the Queen's ability to perform her duties properly.

I remember during a walkabout for the Manitovba centennial in 1970, my family went to look. We were right at the front and he went up to my brother and said "Say there, do you ride?" My brother was 12 at the time and just stared at him. Then he said, "I say, do you ride?" And my brother shrugged his shoulders. And then Phillip said "Oh, you're stupid too then?" and walked on. It was awesome.
