This makes me sad... I heard that he was very sick just after I posted some Streetheart songs in the music thread, and now just a few weeks later he's gone.

Hugh Hefner has died at age 91.

Hefner and his Playboy publication played a significant cultural role in challenging puritanical views of sex in America ...and beyond.  One could imagine that a society where Hefner never existed might have turned out quite differently from the one we live in.

On a personal note, Hefner and his publication are one of the reasons that adolescence was a very confusing time for me.

Hefner was a god among men.  Most every man's dream is to 1. get rich and 2. stare at **** all day & get **** by the most beautiful women in the world at a whim.  Hugh achieved the former by doing the latter.  He's the happiest man to ever live.  RIP.

I never saw the appeal of his tawdry book.   To me, **** is more wholesome than trying to peddle hedonism as an admirable lifestyle.  We were taught about how demeaning his publication was in Catholic school !  Patriarchy vs patriarchy.

Playboy, Penthouse & Hustler were all part of my sex ed.   My family didn't talk about sex, though my mom made an effort about two years after we'd covered the basics of baby-making in school.

But my best friend's family down the street were very different and where I found the three magazines, so if I had any real questions I asked her dad.   I'd read something about oral sex in one of the magazines and was curious, so in front of a bunch of out-of-town family he had visiting that weekend, I asked.  The conversation went like this:

14-year-old me:  R, what is oral sex?
R: (looking uncomfortable, unusual for him) Umm ... you know what sex is?
Me:  Yes
R:  You know what oral is?
Me:  Yes
R:  Well, put the two together ..
Me:  (thinking hard) - Talking about sex?
R:  No.  Let's talk about this later, ok?
Me:  (wondering about all the snickering)  Ok.

Without those magazines, not to mention my best friend's family, I don't know if I would have ever been as sexually experimental as I was.

Cryptic comment, but for the record I don't believe reading things changes your sexual drive, or your sexuality.

It's hard to imagine any man in history who had a better life, with fame, fortune, family and happiness all rolled together. Other men were richer, but when I look at the likes of Warren Buffet or others like him, who, even after they became filthy rich, still spent all day at the office in suits in long board meetings and going over reports and compare them to Hefner who decide '**** this' and spent his time in his silk pajamas running his business out of his mansion, surrounded by bunnies well. I side with Hugh! Not only did he take pictures of beautiful women he hired lots of them. Which meant even when he was dealing with editors, writers, photographers, and managers a lot of them were former playmates. He surrounded himself with celebrities, partied every night, and had his ex-wife and kids living in a house next door so he could see them often.

Emperors might have had more power but which of them had a better life?

He managed to get sex out of the closet and make it mainstream at a time when you couldn't say the word 'pregnant' on TV. He was an active political campaigner for abortion rights, womens rights and gay rights, and against racism. His clubs gave starts to some great Black entertainers who couldn't get work in White clubs. I think it's not wrong to say everything from sex-education in classrooms to abortion rights to womens liberation were greatly boosted by him and his magazine and TV shows.

Begrudgingly, I guess there's something to all of that.  I still can't stomach the pretension of the whole brand though.

It had its ups and its downs, its good points and bad points. The Playboy interviews routinely ran over 7,000-8,000 words, which allowed them a depth few other mediums engaged in on important topics with people like Martin Luther King, Betty Davis and Steve Jobs. And it had some really great stories from towering figures in literature.

In that those experiences led me to the conclusion that sex wasn't a shameful act to be hidden in silence and privacy, it did.  From that basis I could explore beyond missionary position.

I guess my experience is similar to yours but the ideas I took away from the experience totally different.

When I was about 11 or 12, The Hudson's Bay in a local mall kept all the magazines in a secluded part of the store and the dirty magazines were kept with the rest.  Whenever my parents wanted to go to that mall I'd get so excited and jump at the chance and then make an excuse to part ways and go look at the magazines.

I so hear you on this one....

I hesitate to ask but... I thought women weren't generally taken to visual erotica ?  Is that just a myth ?
