I was stunned by this.  He was only 43 and looked like the picture of health. Colon cancer. :(

Ennio Morricone died this summer.  He was the composer of legendary movie soundtracks including The Good The Bad and The Ugly.  He was literally older than dirt, and was there in person while the West was being Won.  This is him at the conductor's podium for one of his most famous pieces:

Naya Rivera drowned in July while boating with her young son. Apparently her son fell off the boat, and while she was able to rescue him, she was too exhausted to get back on the boat afterward.  She was just 33. She was a model, singer, and actress, best known as Santana (the snarky lesbian cheerleader) on Glee. She and Heather Morris (Britney, the airhead lesbian cheerleader on Glee) were the cutest couple on TV. Even though Glee sucked, I sometimes tuned in just to see what kind of hijinks they were up to.

I’m always dismayed at how few people wear life jackets out on the water.  I boat a lot, professionally for work and for pleasure, and always wear a life jacket on my boats, or even in the canoe.

I was just camping the last few days at a very cold lake known for getting windy without warning, where we had to go rescue an old lady stranded on a sandbar when we were there back in June who was in a kayak when the wind came up and couldn’t make it back.  No life jacket.

A young-ish couple was there this week, kayaking and paddle boarding a significant distance out on the lake....  no life jackets.

member squiggy, did any celebs die as a part of your search&rescue efforts? Please give me an 'informative' tag - yes?  ;D

member kimmy - thanks for the reference to Morricone... it allowed me a fine upside diversion to his collaborations with film director Sergio Leone and so-called spaghetti westerns. In any case, a full-life lived well.

Yup. Nobody comes aboard the boats I usually drive without an inflatable PFD for adults and standard life-jackets for kids.  In the not so distant past on larger passenger vessels we didn't require this but occasionally parents would request their kids be given lifejackets, predictably these kids would seethe if they were the odd one out who had to wear one. Now of course that's all fine on deck but since you don't want anyone wearing flotation inside a boat for much the same reason you don't want them wearing seatbelts I tell parents their kids need to take life-jackets off when inside the cabin.  Naturally the kids take this as a personal slight now and don't want to be the odd one out.  I also notice there seems to be a cohort that are to big for kids conventional life-jackets and amongst which a certain wise-ass type can't resist popping off their inflatable vest.  We use them to troll for orca. Don't tie the line around their neck though, if you loop it under one arm they spin when you tow them about.

All that said, I spent almost 30 years on commercial fishing boats and the only times I wore a PFD (a cruiser suit) was on the deck of a trawler in the middle of winter, more to keep warm than anything.

I had  to tow a neighbour home on the long weekend. He has a beautiful old Chris Craft mahogany runabout from the late fifties. I was out and saw him go by looking pretty. A little while later he was dead in the water with the doghouse open. I pulled up and he said the engine had grenaded. Pulled him home and it turned out #8 rod had let go. There were holes in both sides of the cast oil pan and the bilge was full of oil. He was lucky it didn't go through the bottom. He was just cruising along at 2600 RPM and it went bang and stopped. It's the original engine so he is hoping it can be rebuilt. He does have a spare though.

“Spins like a Tomic plug” is a saying, right?

It's not one I've heard because they're supposed to dart back and forth not spin. I've seen the swivels on the hook jam up or the fish has drowned and starts spinning which makes the leaders kink up.

Due to the shape of the plug or is here a swivel between the leader and the plug instead of the plug and the hook?  I usually just use a poor old worm and bobber myself for trout.  I bet we could rigging up something similar for orca (or a Kraken) with a Scotchman and a
lead cannonball.  I doubt the kid would enjoy being skewered with a big hook anymore than a worm but it is what it is.
