A celebrity has died thread
« on: March 19, 2017, 09:29:47 am »
Chuck Berry's passing is as good enough a time to have this kind of thread.

Some may remember my flippant attitude towards this kind of thing in a thread about Nancy Reagan on a previous site.

Death is a feature, not a bug.

It rids the world, sometimes not soon enough, of the old to allow for the new.

Berry is before my time, and, yes, I know he was foundational for rock and roll.

There are good stories coming out by Springsteen and Jagger and Richards.

I have enjoyed this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMddte6yD2w&sns=em

Surly he is the "greatest rock n roller" who ever lived...until the next one passes.

Two today:

Chris Cornell - front man for Sound Garden, Butt Hole Surfers, Audio Slave etc. 52 years young and apparent suicide.

Roger Ailes - Serial sexual harasser, forced out under the "humiliation" of a multi-million severance package from FOX news.  77 and further proof that the good die young and the bad linger on past expiry?

Good riddance to the latter and  thank gawd for modern recordings of the former.

I saw a Roger Ailes front page article, but nothing about him dying so I didn't read it.  Ha, good riddance.

Sad about Chris Cornell, yeah.  That really bummed me out.  He was sexy and talented, I loved a lot of his music.  Way too young.

I was pretty stunned to hear about Chris Cornell this morning.  I don't know much about him as a person, but I liked much of his music, whether with Soundgarden, and Audioslave, and as a solo performer.

Roger Moore aka James Bond died this week. He was okay as Bond. Not that great of an actor but a nice guy.

Meanwhile, in BC, we have lost Grace McCarthy.

I somewhat like the Moore version of Bond.  There was a corn-ball humor and slightly campy aspect that probably inspired the "Archer" animated series.  It didn't take itself too seriously, and Moore fit the tone perfectly.

Daniel Craig is now my favorite Bond-- I think he's the most masculine and sexy of them. Pierce Brosnan was suave and dapper, but somehow lacked something that Craig has. I found Sean Connery to be just kind of boring, although I was young when I saw his bond films so maybe I just didn't "get" it.

I never got into James Bond. Should I go back and start from the first film in the 60s?

Gregg Allman died of liver cancer a couple of weeks ago, aged 69 years.

The "Southern rock" genre was dead before I was even born, and I only knew of the Allman Brothers from a few hits like Ramblin' Man, and I guess also the scene from "Field of Dreams" where Kevin Costner is driving his VW bus down the road as "Jessica" plays.  I started getting interested in the Allman Brothers while discovering other Southern rock acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws, and Blackfoot.  Gregg Allman had a remarkable voice, and also he just *looked* the part-- this tall lanky figure with a long mane of blond hair, he just *looked* like Southern rock personified.

Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi-Trucks Band knew him from a very young age, because Derek is the nephew of the Allman Brothers' drummer. Derek said this about him:
Quote
He was very sweet, but just his persona was intimidating. He was Gregg Allman. I think a lot of people had that feeling when they met him. The way he walked and talked and acted. He had whatever the "it" thing is. It was like meeting Willie Mays or something. It's like, "Holy ****, they exist!" Even when Dickey Betts was leading the band, Gregg was the focal point at all times. He just had that magnetism, and that **** voice. They don't hand those out often. He was the keeper of the mojo. It was just effortless for him, that part of it. He was just a bona fide **** badass. There's a lot of pretenders and a lot of people who think that those torches get passed, but there's not another Gregg. It feels like this fictional, amazing, Southern gothic epic. It's un-****-believable. From childhood on, at every turn, something major and traumatic and awful was happening.

These awful things included the death of the other Allman Brother, Duane, just as the band was taking off in the late 1960s. They remained "the Allman Brothers Band" for another 45 years, despite there being just one Allman left.

Chester Bennington of Linkin Park has apparently commited suicide on what would be Chris Cornell's birthday (see above for his demise).

Ugh.

He tried so hard/to get so far/and in the end/ it doesn't even matter....

Kenny Shields died today, too.

This makes me sad... I heard that he was very sick just after I posted some Streetheart songs in the music thread, and now just a few weeks later he's gone.
