I'm not sure that "celebrity" is exactly the right word...

I am too young to remember much about the G.H.W. Bush presidency... most of what I know about him is shaped by the lens of history. I think history remembers him pretty well, especially with his son lowering the bar and Dolt 45 setting the bar so low that they'll need a backhoe excavator to find it.  I think Bush the former's handling of the Iraq invasion of Kuwait set an example for countries to follow.   He said that he did not go to Baghdad or remove Saddam from power because if you went to Baghdad there was no way out. Bush the latter proved Bush the former was correct about that.

I also remember reading the theory that people remember G.H.W being more likeable than he actually was because of Dana Carvey. Dana Carvey's SNL impression of Bush was a kindly old grandfatherly type who people somehow just liked, while the real GHWB wasn't nearly so affable.

I also recall George HW Bush's guest appearance on The Simpsons, and his backing vocals on this song by Ministry:

"What we are looking at is Good and Evil, Right and Wrong."

I actually think Bush senior should have chased Saddam all the way to Baghdad when he had him on the run. Probably would have saved a lot of Iraqi citizens lives who did die at the hands of the dictator. When Bush junior tried, he had the likes of Rumsfeld and Cheney advising him, and we saw what a disaster that became. Trying to justify it by blaming Iraq for 9-11 when the terrorists were largely Saudis caused a lot of head scratching. It's a tricky environment and just racing up the highway to the Capital wasn't the best strategy. Some of us got to see it up close and personal. In any case, I guess he can skydive all he wants from now on.

Cheney was Bush Sr.'s Secretary of Defense.  Paul Wolfowitz was Undersecretary of Defense under Cheney for Bush Sr.  Rumsfeld, Cheney, & Bush Sr. were old buddies who served together under Ford & Nixon.

Bush Sr was a holdover from the Reagan years, as his VP.  But everything changed with the end of the Cold War in the early 90's, a "new world order" as Bush Sr. famously called it. Then you had those mentioned above who served under Bush Sr. formulating a brand new kind of (neo) conservative foreign policy behind the scenes during the 90's Clinton years.  A new more aggressive US foreign policy, spreading liberalism through regime change & nation-building, with a now-unmatched global military empire free from Soviet interference.  During the Gulf War, US conservatives weren't as keen on nation-building, & had a bad experience with insurgents in Afghanistan.

Bush Sr. seemed like a bit of a limp noodle, a bit like his son Jeb.  Barbara wore the pants in that family.  He was more of a placeholder between Reagan & his son, who both had much more impact.

Bush was the last of the WW2 era presidents.  All of them dealt with WW2 and the new world order of the US.  Then we had a couple of Vietnam Era guys.  And Obama - just a postcard from the past - and now 45 tearing down and rebuilding... something.

George HW Bush's note to Bill Clinton.  Whether or not you agree with these people (as they are monsters in some aspect of their existence, in their control over the lives and deaths of people by the millions) this note explains the basis for the system.

Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook gone  at 81

They had quite few hits and Sawyer was one of the better lead singers in his day. Not one of their main stream hits but one of their quirkier tunes and one of my favourites.

For some reason I thought Dr Hook was the house band from the Muppets Show.  I always pictured "On the cover Of the Rolling Stone" being sung by the green guy with the gold tooth.

There is a definite similarity.

Were they seen as a "novelty act"?  The songs I've heard seem to be not-very-serious.

In a way I guess. I don't think they were trying to make a statement, just have fun and entertain people. In that respect they were a success.

Is it me or did we not lose too many celebs in 2018 ?  I can only think of one right now, Bourdain.

I was sad to hear Bob Dorough died. He helped me understand conjunctions.

Aretha Franklin? Stephen Hawking?   Burt Reynolds?  Dolores O'Riordan?  Stan Lee?  David Ogden Stiers? Margot Kidder?

Looking over the list I saw some other names I didn't know had passed away this year. Kofi Annan, Bible-thumper Billy Graham, writer Tom Wolfe, writer Ursula K LeGuin, tv producer Stephen Bochco, director Milos Forman, Winnie Mandela, Ingmar from Ikea, Harry Anderson from "Night Court",  pro wrestlers Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and "The Dynamite Kid", Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Penny Marshall (director, and "Laverne" from "Laverne and Shirley".)

Ok - I missed the first two, who were giants.  The next 5 were from almost-legendary status to well-almost-maybe.

From the long list Milos Forman was a big one, and Paul Allen, Penny Marshall, Billy Graham.

Still, not like the year of Bowie.
