Gord Downie... we all knew it was coming.

John Dunsworth ... I never watched the Trailer Park Boys.

Roy Halladay... I didn't watch baseball either.  But listening to the news report this morning, they talked a lot about his charitable work in Toronto, his enthusiasm for trying to boost the spirits of sick kids... he bought a private suite in the Skydome and every game sick kids got to watch from the private suite.  He contributed to fundraising for medical research.  Our sports "heroes" often let us down when they're off the field of play, but it sounds like Halladay was indeed one of "the good guys".

"Are heartthrobs still a thing, kimmy?"

Haha. Is kimmy the heartthrob expert or something? This is hilarious to me.

That's definitely profiling of some kind.

 :D

I am speechless.  I simply have no idea how to respond to that.

Malcolm Young from AC/DC died earlier this week as well. I gather he's been suffering from dementia for years.

Delores O'Riordan, the singer from The Cranberries, has died.  She was just 46.  Not much has been released yet.  She struggled with bipolar disorder, and when someone so young dies on tends to suspect things like drugs or self-harm.

Delores O'Riordan is known as the distinctive voice behind 1990s hits like "Dreams", "Linger", and of course "Zombie".

This one made me sad.  That song Linger... All of this seems so pervasively Irish.

I believe she had health issues recently (2014 maybe?) and possibly underwent surgery. If I'm throwing a guess out there, I'm thinking she got hooked on painkillers (opiods most likely)--especially with bipolar disorder. She probably ended up dying with some cocktail of prescription narcotics in her system. It's sad if true. Hell at 46 it's sad if not true too.

So Tom Petty died of an accidental overdose. One of that legion of middle aged folks with painful ailments for which medicine apparently has little resolution other than more and more powerful drugs.

I don't  believe in celebrities.I find people get caught up in hero worshipping idiots for the wrong reasons.

That said I did note Red Fisher the Montreal Canadiens reporter from the Montreal Star then Gazette died yesterday. He wrote over 70 years. He was the sports writer if you werea Habs fan like I was growing up in Montreal. Him I take note of. They don't make them like that anymore. Growing up in Quebec we had to play by play announcers Rene Lecavaliers (French) and Danny Gallivan (English) and no one can touch them. Then we had as writers Jacques Beauchamps (French) and Red Fisher, English. No one could touch them.

I met Red Fisher. Polite. Serious. There was nothing he did not know about the Habs and hockey. Don Cherry is the final one from that generation.

So you'd prefer to listen to a play by play of a hockey game than some good music. Fine. To each their own.

No I did not say that. I like all kinds of music. I just don't call the musicians celebrities. I myself call them artists.  I don't hero worship them like adoring fans do. You again missed the point.

I did grew up at a stage of development 9-14 idolizing sports athletes but that passed. Did I find people cool? Sure I liked MLK, RFK, certain bands, but not to hero worship.  The fact I don't idolize people as celebrities does not mean I do not appreciate gifted artists or doctors, etc. I just don't turn them into Gods on a higher platform.
I personally think we do to much of that **** in society and its not healthy. Like  Meaghan Markle. Why the hell should I consider her a celebrity? Or Harry for that matter? If someone else wants to, its their business. I find idols to worship a waste of energy.  I believe there are a lot of plain boring non celebrity people out there I know who to me are just as important in their own way.

I do appreciate the point of the thread. Some famous people bring back amazing memories. I like that people have been able to leave good memories for others and read about that. Its just for me, I don't call them celebrities.

I actually am good friends with some actors who are as humble as it gets and detest and shun celebrity crap. I respect them for that down to earth stuff. I just wish we remembered people not as celebrities but as good people. Its just a discussion point. When a guy like BB King died, I was like too bad man, I really liked his music but I would not put him on a fawning pedestal. How do I explain it-you really think all this fawning over the kardashians or kanye west or Bruce Jenner is well placed? I am not trying to be a snot, I just think its b.s.

Yep we all know that "celebrity" is a social construct. I wouldn't waste a lot of time navel gazing over it.

Dan Gurney also died this week. One of the great all rounders who also built and raced his own cars. Survived auto racing's deadliest era to die of old age.
