Consumer culture...
« on: April 10, 2024, 11:59:56 am »
I see on Facebook now that people are talking about a Loblaws boycott from May 1st.

This is a terrifying idea for the algorithm, because if they're found out to be suppressing messages about the boycott, they are exposed as being beholden to their advertisers.

Public social media?

Why are they boycotting?

If a non-profit made a social media I'd be down.   Not government though.   More like Firefox or Linux

Price gouging it seems....

I can't tell if this is just one of my friends or if it comes from some central spot.  I couldn't have imagined a challenge to social like this though...

Loblaws doesn't seem as busy anymore.  They're the most expensive.  I'm already choosing other cheaper grocers and usually have.

Maybe they can create non profit youtube so the ads aren't so frequent.

The internet used to be free in the old days.

But the ads pay the people who create the content.

Yes mostly because copyright laws weren’t enforced.  How much content do you think people would work to create if they weren’t getting paid?  Do you work for free?

I agree though that there are far too many ads.

Not nearly as much.

I think Youtube would probably be better if people weren't paid so much as to be able to make a living off views.  Youtube thumbnails are like the cover of National Enquirer now, a lot of clickbait.

I would even be ok with a full minute ad before the video starts, if there were no more ads the rest of the way.  But sometimes YouTube is unwatchable when there’s an ad every few minutes it seems.
