His marriage actually is where he didn't waiver from duty.  He married the person his family chose so that he can provide an heir and even though it didn't work out, he gave it a try.  He has obviously always loved Camilla all his life and said it's 'non-negotiable' that he marries her.  The cheating aside, I think the way he's loved her is very romantic.

Where he waivered from duty is in his political stances.  He left his mother to show up alone to meet Chinese president.  He has been ardent supporter of the environment and other faiths.  He was working with immigrants and impoverished kids long before meeting Diana and when it was more controversial.

The parts of his duty he waivered from I absolutely admire and it makes me like him even more.  I'm just saying he hasn't always been neutral like a good little royal which is fine by me since I support his causes.

I think he will make a fantastic king, it's too bad so many people can't see beyond his marriage.

I think the monarch is mostly only relevant as a symbol.  I think their personal lives should be totally ignored unless it interferes with their duties.  I don't think we need to replace the monarchy or anything, i'm just saying their role in society is IMO very limited as it should be.  Their duties should be relegated to acting professionally and courteously especially when performing duties, and acting in the best interests of the country on the very rare occasion that they need to act politically.

I know literally nothing about Phillip, which I think is probably a good sign because it means he hasn't messed up much.  Nobody should care much about him unless he somehow interfered with the Queen's ability to perform her duties properly.
