Verne Troyer died today. He was just 49 years old. He was best known as "Mini-Me" from the Austin Powers movies. He was also immensely popular on social media, where his self-deprecating humor used his tiny stature to great comic effect. One post featured him showing of his "new Tesla" (a toddler-sized go-cart model), terrorized by dogs taller than he is, hanging out with NBA players... a picture of Troyer measured against a stack of donuts found him to be 27 donuts tall. He seemed to take his tiny stature in stride.
But that wasn't the case. He struggled with depression. A year ago he was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning. He almost drank himself to death. No cause of death has been released yet, but the statement from his family makes one suspect that his death was self-inflicted. Even though he made people laugh throughout his career, he was ultimately very isolated.
This one feels worse than most, because this is a person who was struggling and who never truly got to live a full life in spite of the laughter he brought to others.
