Vacation Culture
« on: August 20, 2017, 06:48:13 am »
Well, I'm back.  This was a big week on the east coast of Maine with the full family, including kids (nephews), of 15 folk.

Observations:

-Trump's America looks pretty much the same as you drive by.  I felt weird about my sister reading off Trump's tweets in a mocking tone while we were in the backyard.  It is their country after all.  But I was glad to get out of there.  There were big marches in Boston yesterday as we drove past on our way home.

- New England, where I was, is working class, family and almost all white.  There were more black folks than in the past but it seemed to me that they were part of larger family gatherings with white people, maybe through intermarriage.  That's something.

- There is a heavy presence of local government where I was in terms of *rules*.  Rules for everything.  Dogs on the beach hours, length of leash, no bikes on the beach hours, no smoking, no vaping... I think there's something about older settlements maybe (the town we were in was settled in the 1600s) that make for a bigger culture of 'rules'.  Dunno.

- No gay folk.  I think I saw one teen lesbian couple holding hands on the beach.

- The ocean was cold COLD cold.  In August.  I suspect it never gets warm.

- We had to get away a few days, so we took day trips.  Saw Dunkirk, which was great.

I am glad to be back.  I think I will finish seeing the rest of this country, and give the administration a chance to exit before I go back to USA.

One of the GOP Senators who stood up against Trump is Maine's. Did you visit Portland?

No.  Stayed pretty much at the southern border.  A beach trip, not a city trip.
