Sunglasses are weird
« on: October 26, 2018, 11:05:10 pm »
I find sunglasses odd.  I can remember as a kid never, ever wearing sunglasses.  I spent so much time outside i didn't really need them, my eyes were adapted to the sun, save the occasional day i spent all afternoon in the summer sun and i would get a bit of a "sun headache" afterwards.

Now it's common many people put on sunglasses when they go outside.  Humans did not evolve to have sunglasses for a reason:  we never needed them.  Apparently adults go outside so rarely that now we do need them.

We live in Canada, so we go outside less than many other countries, so maybe our eyes aren't as exposed to sun rays, so are sunglasses less common in ie: California or the southern US?  Do black people need them less than white people because black skin around the eyes/cheeks absorbs more rays/glare (think of a baseball or football player wearing "eye black" to avoid sun glare)

I think ozone depletion has made them necessary. I think there's about 4% less ozone now than in the 1970s. I never wore a hat or sunscreen or sunglasses when I was a kid either, even for hours at the beach. Now I feel like I'm blinding myself when I go out without them, and I literally start to burn in minutes.

I have blue eyes.
The sun sometimes bothers me, often after being in a dark place like having lunch in a tavern and coming out into the early afternoon sun.
I rarely wear sunglasses when doing outdoor activities, other than snowshoeing/skiing. I probably should do so when I am out on the water, sometimes after a long day my eyes will bother me.
I am too old to be cool.

I never leave home without sunglasses, and I wear them most of the time when I'm outdoors. Ultraviolet protection aside, I find bright sunlight to be uncomfortable.  I also feel like with less glare and brightness, I seem more detail.

I had an eye exam one time were they put drops in that cause your pupils to dilate. I guess so the doc can see into the very depths of your soul. In any case they stay that way for some time after the exam is done, and you're back outside. It was lovely sunny summer day. I had my Ray Bans with me but even with those on just reflected sun from a building would hurt. There was a pub nearby so what a good excuse to tuck in their and be cool sipping a beer with my shades on.

I had laser eye surgery about a year and half ago (no more contact lenses!) and find I am more sensitive to sunlight than I was before.  Thankfully, I'm a sunglasses ****.  I probably have 6 or 7 pairs around the house, garage and in my car right now.  8)
