Stupid People in the News

I didn't think there was an appropriate category for this so I made one up.  I think it could get lots of use.

This particular story comes to us from Egypt, where a conservative Muslim lawyer by the name of al-Wahsh has been condemned for declaring that it is men's patriotic duty to sexually harass and assault women who don't dress appropriately.  (He has also opposed female judges, because they might make a ruling or issue a fatwa while menstruating and everyone may as well go to hell.)

He is opposed by a liberal Muslim cleric, Shaikh Rashad, with whom he had a physical altercation on TV a while ago.

The fiercely heated discussion turned ferocious after Sheikh Rashad, who is famed for his permissive interpretation of Islam, argued women should not necessarily be required to cover their hair with a headscarf.

“You're an apostate! You're an infidel” Mr Wahsh yelled.

The cleric responded: “You're mentally ill. You belong in a mental hospital.”

Mr al-Wahsh then took his shoe off in an apparent preparation for a fight as whacking someone with the sole of your shoe is a serious insult in the Arabic world. Mr Rashed then rushed at him while Mr al-Wash responded by hitting with his shoe.

The spectacle culminated in the two men grappling across the debating area, smashing a glass panel and having to be pulled apart by the studio crew.

It seems the divide between conservatives and liberals is as wide in Egypt as it is anywhere.

Another stupid person, closer to home.  This one is a Quebec Judge who thinks an overweight 17-year-old shpuld be flattered if a 49-year-old man gropes her because at least someone found her attractive despite her weight.

Governor General supports science over religion and Scheer thinks there is something wrong with that.

That's because he's an actual moron, unlike the one that people accuse Trudeau of being.

To be fair, I think there's something wrong with the Governor General getting involved in politics. She should not hold a political stance on issues. That's for parliament. Her role is to be the embodiment of the nation.

Worse than that, I would actually argue that it's incredibly dangerous if she was political because then she could refuse to recognize the results of elections and a slew of other nasty things that would cause constitutional crisis.

Would you feel the same if she expressed a stance against terrorism?

The fact is she took a stance against Canadians. There's ways she could have worded this. She could have said, "as Canadians we need to be mindful of our carbon footprint." Instead she said, "Can you believe these morons!?" It's not only political, but it completely lacks the dignity of the position she holds.

She's a scientist.  She doesn't like fake news.  I don't really care.

She is our defacto figurehead.  This is about people who make up a nation.  Looking down her nose at religious people is unbecoming of a GG and a scientist also.

Unity is the most important thing right now.

It was an incredibly moronic thing for her to do. First, because governor generals don't 'take a stand' on issues of controversy. She's supposed to be, as Stockwell Day said on CBC, someone who unites us, not someone who divides us.

It was also moronic to mock large cross-sections of the country. She didn't so much take a stand as sneer at anyone who believes in God. Why? So she could laugh it up with the cool kids?

I twas also moronic in that she's supposed to be the representative of the Queen. You remember her? Been head of the Church of England for about 55 years now? How do you think the Queen would have reacted had she been sitting in that audience?

Weeeeird.  I just watched the video and she is reading those statements from a prepared speech.

The Queen always depended on those very same morons Julie rolls her eyes at.

I feel like you can't have a stupid people in the news thread without mentioning Pat Robertson.  Pat's brain has atrophied to the size of a walnut.  The withered old **** made news not once but twice last week.  First he called for Trump to end the Mueller investigation and pardon everybody.   And then, in response to a woman who called his TV show to ask how God could let her 15 year old son die, Robertson speculated that maybe God killed him now so that he wouldn't become an atheist later in life.

It makes me kind of sad that some people are so bereft of sense that they look to this feebleminded fossil for advice.
