About $10 MIL per year.

So... less than $1 per $30,000.  The average Canadian pays about $2 for this or so.  So ... lost couch cushion money.  Please don't argue costs about these things it's not in the same ballpark as the important discussion.

Which is... the deaths.

If people go to see pretty planes flying, can't a computer run them ?  Is it worth the price of one human life every five years to develop AI to do this ?  Or buy it ?  Or do people go because it's dangerous ?

No a computer can’t run them, that’s the whole  point of doing or seeing anything humans do at the highest level.

Last Sunday we were out on the beach, and a single engine plane flew low over the lake, then another, then another. By the end it had been a parade of 12 small aircraft, plus a couple of helicopters, flying over.  We'd already guessed what was going on, but the local news outlet confirmed it: the local flying clubs did a fly-past as a salute to the Snowbirds.

Frecce Tricolore over Genoa yesterday on their tour of Italy.

Watched them perform at Abbotsford in 1986. They put on a great show and have been flying these aircraft since 1981.

And some Canadians want to get rid of the Snowbirds.

Just because they're cool to see, doesn't mean they're worth the money or the lives lost.

Canada aspires to be a country totally without character.

Yes it costs but it is a symbol of goodwill and character. Its supposed to incite some pride in being Canadian. I agree with Wilbur and others who point that out. I get excessive military displays are not everyone's cup of team. These jets are a symbol of discipline and working together in a common cause.

These Tudor jets are old though. I hear they have excellent maintenance done on them but I guess their age is catching up?  I kind of like the fact they are aged its part of their character.

The pilots engage in very dangerous manouvers. They know that. They choose that way of life to display a positive symbol. I guess it comes down to one's subjective views on such displays.

My father was in the military so I was brought up to believe such displays were not about glorifying violence or war but a sense of shared positive values. I get some people don't like such displays. Maybe its a fine line but watching men in kilts and marching with bagpipes to me was a lot different than watching goosestepping Nazis, Russians, North Koreans, Chinese.

You have me mistaken with an eagle. I only come to eat your carcass.

which begs the layperson question: what type/level of bird management does a regional airport, typically, maintain?

Airport maintenance will look after birds on the airport using bangers etc. Used to keep an airplane at Boundary Bay which is located between the Vancouver city dump and the bay. Used to hate it when they would use bangers on a flock of gulls sitting on the ramp. They would all take off and crap on my machine.

Bird strikes can happen anywhere. We had one in the middle of the night departing Kennedy.

I wonder if there's enough left of that J85 to be able to find at least traces of bird guts on the blades if that's what happened.

Canada aspires to be a country totally without character.

Maybe we just don't all agree on what that character should be?
