Small Advices Culture
« on: June 14, 2021, 09:58:51 am »
This thread is for bite sized morsels of advice that help you day-to-day, whether it be how to find a parking space, reducing dishwasher stress, or how to dry your undergarments in a Motel 6, after an unfortunate series of Mexican tapas.

Here's mine:

PUT A WHITEBOARD IN YOUR KITCHEN WITH A WORKING DRY ERASE MARKER

Things will start to get done....

Invert your chords. The root note doesn't always have to be on the bottom.

If I ever take up the cello, I will remember this.

MH, whiteboard?  LOL  No way.  I don’t need a reminder of all the **** I haven’t done.  Being nagged at by an inanimate object is not what I want to happen when I go into the kitchen to grab a beer before lazing on the sofa to watch the hockey game.

My daily advice:

Always carry a pocketknife.

I have another household in my family who does it.  They use it as a shopping list.  When you see a certain food run out or you think of something you add it to the board.

But the thing is you can't bring a board to the grocery store.  I think a magnetized paper pad and pen on the fridge might be more convenient.

I agree with you that I don't want chores on my fridge.

Always dry the blade of your shaving razor off well with a towel or piece of tissue.  When you get a knick in your blade that's almost always a small piece of rust that's formed.  This will prevent that, so your only reason to change the blade should be your razor going dull.

We have a two-step process.  The whiteboard is in the kitchen, so you write stuff there.  The 'master list' is on Trello - an app.  And when you think of it, you erase items from the white board and add it to the Trello list, which you read off your phone in the grocery store ...

Next-level grocery shopping is incorporating sales and such... ie. don't buy anything unless it's on sale esp. coffee

For a grocery list, we use a shared Note between our iPhones.  It updates automatically on all devices, you can have it on your phone when you’re at the grocery store.

There you go…. Another helpful Squid-tip.

Yeah I use an app notepad for groceries too.  Didn't think to sync it though, thanks.

Yes - Evernote, Trello or Google Sheets work... any app where there's a master version of the data in the cloud.

We also make sure to use an ANALOG and DIGITAL version of most things.

Analog is actual handier... for example in the kitchen for our family calendar and grocery and 'to do' list, you grab the marker and write.

But, of course, digital is great for on the go.

And once you get there... the next thing to do is figure out how to live IN THE MOMENT despite having such great planning.

Seriously, my parents were terrible at this **** but WTH it was the 60s

I like getting home and going DAMN, I forgot the _____.  Gives me an excuse to go out.

Either that or I save money because I decide I didn't need it anyway.

Wouldn't be without my pocket knife.

Or maybe they were better at “living in the moment”.

Nope.  Too old for that.
