Happy Canada Day
« on: July 01, 2018, 08:15:24 pm »
I hope I'm not being redundant but I didn't see anything posted elsewhere. I'm not a huge flag waver but I was proud to dawn my Team Canada hockey sweater I was gifted from the team while working overseas as I headed over for a visit for others at my local. I certainly love and appreciate this country. And I firmly salute the incredible hard work, the intelligence, the acceptance of others, and of course the sacrifices so many have brought to this place to create this place. And a thing that did bring a tear to my eye was watching those school children from the UK who have been tending the grave sites of Newfoundland soldiers killed there in WWI after they discovered overgrown, 15 years ago. I look forward to hearing the results of the visits with the families.

Me either, but I did put on a cheap (made in Bangledesh - yes, just checked the label) t-shirt from Dollarama I picked up several weeks ago for the occasion. It does however say Canada on the front, with a maple leaf.

Happy Canada Day one and all.

July 1 has a double significance for Newfoundlanders, it is also Beaumont Hamel Day. On July 1, 1916 the Newfoundland Regiment went over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. On July 2, out of over 800, only 68 men were able to answer roll call. The issue of whether Canada Day or Beaumont Hamel Day should take precedence on July 1 was controversial for many years, and probably still is for many.

Can't wait to get back there. So far only once when I was a young lad, but for most of the summer, and once when mine were young (a couple of weeks). It is wonderful in the summer, and I would like to visit in the winter as well but not sure how long I will stay for that.

I was sent there for work when I was in my early twenties and was lucky enough to meet a lady and we hit it off and the next thing I knew I had moved from Toronto to Tors Cove. (a little south of St. John's) I became involved with MUN (memorial unviersity of nfld) arts department. It was  a much closer knit community than I was used to it seemed and I was able to get invited to a party and end up playing harmonica with Ron Heinz and help Phillip Pratt sail his boat about to where it got hulled out for the winter. He made a silkscreen print of that event and  he gave me one that hangs on my wall to this day. The artistic community there was, and has long since been amazing, and the people are strong, accepting, friendly, and bye de Jesus byes dey got a sense o' humor.
I'm looking forward to getting back there for a visit too.
Cheers.
