I think maybe he is quibbling over the descriptor "hate". Someone who thinks a woman should stay home, make sandwiches and fetch beer, and have sex with him whenever he feels like probably doesn't "hate" women. Somebody who thinks women are on a par with dogs and cattle probably doesn't "hate" women, in fact he probably loves dogs and cattle as well.
It's like homophobes quibbling over the term "homophobia" because they don't "fear" gays, they just hate them.
Regardless it's a pretty pointless diversion.

It's only pointless if you believe motivation is unimportant. And motivation is only unimportant if you dismiss any possibility of dealing with it. And one could say the same about 'homophobes' too.
If your only ambition is simply to denigrate them and point out how awful they are, then yes, it's pointless.
