If you buy a high quality fairly recent phone how many years do you guys usually get out of them?

I'm thinking 4-5 years until they start to really drag in performance?  At least with Android?

I’ve done poorly with my phones in recent years.  They’ve crapped out after 2 years, and one year respectively, before I got the iPhone, which has been a year so far with no issues.  I trusted my previous phone’s claim of ‘waterproof’, which it clearly wasn’t. At least, not for very long.

Before that, I think I had my old LG for 5 years, or so.  It was a great phone.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, everyone! I will be checking them all out.

In the meantime he has sent me a wish-list with a cheap and highly dubious-looking Chinese phone he found on Gearbest, plus some gamer gear he wants me to buy him.

I think I will spring for a better phone and skip the gamer stuff.  The idea of subsidizing his gaming problem doesn't sit well with me. Might as well start buying him heroin as well.

I'm too cheap to spend money on phones so I bought an unlocked new pixel 3 that was unused Verizon stock for $200 from someone on Amazon and it's been great.

I know I'm a bit late on this, but I just wanted to second Michael's suggestion of a Motorola phone.  It's as good as any LG or Samsung I've had, at half the price.  My experienced with a TCL phone was bad, I don't recommend those at all.
