What did you misunderstand ?

Management is shitty ?  That's a general opinion I have of the state of management in the world today is all.

"...she seemed stunned that nobody checked the team's comings and goings."

How does this statement relate to anything else in your post?

The idea of a self-directed team without a taskmaster manager was alien to her.

So management is shitty because they don’t keep track of whether their employees are there working?   Or is that good management?

Maybe she's been in an environment like mine - total micromanaging.

That's good management.  We can focus on improving the workstreams instead of nitpicking the employees.

If they're not performing, they will bring it up with each other - since it will just show up in the numbers automatically.

Yes, it generally sucks in Canada.  It's not even great where I am.  I do my best but ... my God how my hands are tied ...

I don't want to work for your boss, the consequences of a late report sound awful.
