Quitting Alcohol & Other Vices
« on: April 27, 2019, 03:09:42 am »
I am hoping to quit alcohol finally. I am 30 hours sober.

Does anyone else on this forum have troubles with the bottle?

I suggest AA. If nothing else it will give you a chance to meet and learn from people who have been where you are now but have managed to stay sober for years.

You should also talk to you doctor. Quitting suddenly can cause serious health issues, such as seizures, depending on how much you have been drinking and for how long. These issues are easily managed with medical help.

Also, talk to your doctor about drugs that reduce physical craving such as Naltrexone. These drugs are *not* a magic pill that makes the problem go away but every little bit helps in these early stages.

Finally, stick with it. If you have been drinking for a long time the next 6-12 months will be absolute hell. But if you can persevere your life will get better than it has been for a long time.

You can do it.  I had my last smoke, maybe ever, 11 months ago.

Good on ya. How's that going now, are you still jones'n once in awhile or are you beyond that? One reason I ask is that I had a discussion with an old buddy of mine who had quit for almost as many years as have I. He made the comment that went something like "once a smoker, always a smoker", which was to suggest that no matter how long you have quit for, given the right circumstances, any reformed smoker who had been a heavy smoker would go buy a pack. I told him I couldn't disagree more. I quit smoking because I just got to hate it and even if I was told I had say 6 months to live from some other cause I might do some crazy **** but never would I pick up a smoke. I still hate even being near people who have the smell of cigarette smoke on their clothes. Point being I guess is that if I can wean myself that effectively than anybody can. One incentive of course is just get the calculator out and tote up how much Do-Rey-Me you have saved so far. Carry on with the program.

I actually agree with your friend and if I ever make it to Burning Man again I plan to smoke all week.  Don't try to talk me out of it.  Not going for 5 years at least though.

It takes a special type of moron to mark a post of someone asking for help as "dumb" and then do the same to the only response directly addressing the question asked. Makes me wonder what squid's real issues are.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried AA.  However where I am situated, I lost four friends/acquaintances in a 2 month span in early 2018.  I ahve soured on AA since. Now days, the rooms are packed with non-drinkers (AA now accepts anyone with addictions).  The room are full of people in treatment centres, and many have problems with hard drugs. It was not always like this, but sadly it is now.

I am trying some meditation and volunteering. I feel if I grow as a person, I can get the confidence to not drink. I am not a full blown alcoholic, but I have a bad habit of drinking too much.

Squid has many issues.  Maybe as many as I.  He once threatened to physically assault me on this forum.

Reported to the mod.  Provide evidence and the Mod will ban me immediately.  Accusations of physical threats are not something to be trolling with.

You also do not have to be a 'full blown alcoholic' to find it difficult to stop once you start. It might be worth thinking about why you don't have a problem with drugs. Is it the illegality? The fear of the side effects? An effective technique can be to take whatever instinct you have that tells you to avoid that crap and apply it to alcohol. i.e. tell yourself over and over again that alcohol is as bad as hard drugs. If you do it enough your mind will start to believe you and avoiding alcohol will become instinctive.

If you tried, I’d punch you in the throat.   I don’t accept hugs from strangers.

Lol

Yeah, ban me now....

Not only have you derailed a thread, and made it about yourself. You also are a self-proclaimed snitch.  For your own sake, I sure hope you are never incarcerated.

I never posted anything in this topic until you and TimG thought it was necessary to mention me, and you lied about me threatening you.    But please carry on talking about your sobriety.

You are the one ignorant enough to mark a perfectly reasonable post as "dumb". If you have a problem with it explain yourself. Marking posts with drive by "dumb" ratings is simply rude and I called you out for your inconsiderate behavior. If you don't want to get involved in a thread then don't get involved with drive by ratings.

Just post on-topic and don’t worry about the post ratings...   it’s not quite as serious as you’re taking it.
