This guy's voice and face are detestable but he lays out a pretty clear roadmap for what's coming for us philosophically and politically IMO

Roderick is just fun to listen to.  Some of these ideas are good, if steeped in the early 90s.

Remember fear of television ?  Did that simply give way to fear of the internet ?

Or did we change, in that we realized - with a SECOND incursion of pervasive media into our lives - that media themselves are more than just a gadget in the living room.

That said, I am starting to think that the only reql danger of the internet is social media algorithms... and those seem under threat as per Elon (open sourcing them) and the general consumer complaining about their news feed.

Nihilism means ancient magic books don't create right and wrong and we can use our brains to create our own idea of right & wrong.

My response to myself several years later is that while this is true, what happens when some people's brains create their own ideas of right and wrong, and some of these ideas are harmful, or dangerous etc.

Everyone's favorite philosopher Jordan Peterson says that we can find value and meaning in old ancient stories (like in the Bible) that have been created and changed over thousands of years and used to organize social norms, sometimes successfully (and sometimes detrimentally).

I know a couple of people personally that have such strong egos that they are basically incapable of self-criticism.  These kinds of people will make up all sorts of stories in their head in order to legitimate their beliefs or behaviour.  These kinds of people can be dangerous, and some might be better off being frightened into following the Bible rather than their own whims.

I have a theory that the more a Marxist intellectual looks like Marx, the more other Marxists will listen to their ideas.

I have a theory that the more someone talks on the Internet about Marxists, the less likely they are to have the foggiest idea of what Marxism is.

I saw it as more a general theory and not particularly related to this discussion, but you may be reinforcing my belief in it.

People can't accept the loss of religion.  It's pretty clear that many were plunged into amoral existence without the threat of Hell.

Then how come the most amoral are the most religious?

I'm pretty sure that's untrue.

Then how do you explain Trump's popularity with evangelicals?

I am sure that's a problem.  It doesn't say as much as you think that it does.

I'll bet people with no moral sphere who don't believe in God love Trump too.  It's not a good way to assess the question.

I don't think you could ever get a reliable count on it, but I would be willing to bet there's not much in it.

Edit>  Actually, now that I think about it, If I was putting money on it, I'd probably go with BM.

What it says is that many religious people have no moral sphere.  They have their issues, in this case primarily abortion, and they are willing to dance with the devil all night long if it gets them what they want.
