Camping on one of the northern Gulf Islands this weekend.  I’m getting back into fly fishing.  A friend lent me one of his rods and a reel with floating line.

Taking my kayak out on the lake tomorrow.

I’d say I’m looking up at the sky, looking at the stars and thinking of you people, but it’s  cloudy. G&Ts are the drink du jour. I’ve had several.

There’s cell coverage here....

After several trips with the fishing  kayak, here are my thoughts:

Overall, I really enjoy kayak fishing.  Great way to get into smaller lakes which would be inaccessible to a larger boat. By ‘larger’ I mean a 12 foot inflatable, so that boat isn’t exactly big either.

The one lake was absolutely teeming with cutthroat trout in a shallow channel between 2 parts of the lake.  It was amazing fishing. The put-in for the lake is a short, very steep trail with room for 1 kayak to launch where the lake turns into a river.  The current makes it tricky too...  hop in and paddle like mad staying as close to shore as possible!  So access is very limited.

But I digress...

2 things I dislike, but are a necessary compromise:

Upright positioning makes it not so great in the wind, but makes it really easy to fish out of and hop in and out of, so that’s worth the compromise to me.

Paddle locomotion only.  And this is about price. My buddies both have kayaks with a pedal system that frees up your hands and allows you to have really nice control over your position, especially in wind or current.   You don’t need to put down your rod and grab the paddle all the time.  Great feature!  But they also paid 2.5 times more for their kayaks.

Anyone else flyfish?

I am just getting back into it after years of not bothering….  But it’s such a great way to fish….  Much more challenging than throwing out a lure and reeling it back in.

I bought a new Orvis 4-weight, 10 foot rod.  Excited to try it out for the first time this weekend walking some rivers on the North Island.  (and hope I don’t die of heat exhaustion)!

But also I got more wet from drips off the paddles as I paddled.  Is this normal?

Paddling technique….   I’ve discovered that a proper paddling technique, with a steep entry angle of the paddle into the water, will make a big difference with drips.

My review of the Orvis Coldwater 4# 10’ fly rod:

I’ve used the new fly rod a lot this summer.  My buddies and I have been doing really well on a couple rivers and the larger lakes catching rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and the odd dolly varden.

Most of the lakes are too warm this summer to produce any fish….  They simply become inactive because they, essentially, need to concentrate on getting enough oxygen and they hunker down as deep as they can, or leave if they can.  So fishing on the small-ish lakes has been very slow.

Luckily, we have several larger lakes and some rivers that have remained cool enough to be productive still.

We have been catching some cutthroat in the 2 to 4 pound range (and some smaller rainbows).  The cutthroat are at the river mouths feeding on rainbow trout fry that are entering the lakes.

The new rod has been fantastic.   Very easy to cast.  The extra length over a standard 9 foot rod is advantageous when fishing out of the kayak.

Here’s an actual fish caught by The Squid:  (maybe a 2 1/2 pound cutthroat).  I caught it on a pumpkin-head fly.  (Giving away secrets…)

Was camping for a few days over the weekend.  We keep doing really well catching the trouts in the same spot.

Great cutthroat caught on a bead-head leech pattern.  [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Fished yesterday in a very large Vancouver Island lake.  Caught a monster cutthroat trout.  Probably weighed about 7lbs.  Biggest cutthroat I’ve ever caught.  Not on the fly this time though.  I wasn’t having much success on flies.

P.s.  Catch and release….

Was going to go on a local fishing trip for a few days but it was cancelled due to weather.  Hopefully will go soon.

I love the outdoors but sometimes it's hard to find people to go with.  A lot of my friends are city slickers.  One of them is afraid to go in a kayak or canoe.

I'll go with you but I assume you live in BC like everyone.

That's nice of you.  I don't live BC but also not in your neck of the woods.

Alberta or Yukon ?  That's like BC.

Outdoors where I live is that strip of grass between the eastbound and westbound.

I went solo yesterday.  I like it…. Get to do whatever the heck I want without consultation.

You have no ability to leave the city?

There are places to fish within an hour of Toronto, according to this website.  I drive more than that and I don’t live in a big city.

I'm not going to go FISHING FFS.  I will hang out in nature, that's it.
