Outdoor Activities Culture

I went fishing last weekend on a local lake.  Didn’t catch much.  One small trout.  Not a keeper.  I tried trolling flatfish, plugs and spoons. 

The fish were on my sounder showing at about 20 metres...  lots of them.  Not many were any shallower, but I don’t have downriggers to get to them in my little lake boat. 

I have one of these:

Stryker 380.  I use a 15hp, 6hp or an electric trolling motor depending on where I go.

The plan this weekend is to try a much shallower lake.

What did you do last weekend?  Any outdoor activities that interest you?  Has COVID spurred you to take something outdoorsy up, or has it hindered your outdoor activities?

Hindered.

That said, we found a new conservation area and took Easy.

He's starting to talk and probably appreciate that he lives in a concrete jungle.   So he looked at the open fields and said "it's so great !"

I know a guy who sent his kid to a camp where they take you up north and you camp it rough.  I think I'll try to get Easy to do that.

Either way, i'm thinking of buying a fishing kayak.

Nice!  I have one being delivered mid-May.  I sold my canoe and decided to get a kayak.

I ordered the Perception Outlaw 11.5.  Looks very stable and easy to use.  Cost a grand.  If I like it a lot and I want to upgrade, I’ll get a Hobie, which are significantly more expensive.

I recall the time I was rowing my little 6' dinghy home one evening when half a dozen orca popped up all around me. I have a better sense of what an amuse-bouche, a fancy hors d'oeuvre, feels like.  Kayaks bring to mind something crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle.

Seriously though best be careful to make no noise if you do find yourself in a similar situation if there's a seal or sealion around. They may hear you and try to climb aboard to get away from the orca. I've seen that happen, to me and other boats.

Anyone else play golf?


I’m sure everyone here would enjoy hearing that I finally fixed my slice.  It was all in my grip.  Seriously...  the bloody ball goes fairly straight now!  I do pull it to the left more now....   but it’s manageable.

Here’s what really helped.   This dude has great advice!

Good video. I used to be a terrible slicer and my biggest issue was not keeping my left elbow straight. Now I am more likely to pull hook with a strong grip. I'll have to try his more systematic approach.

Fishing kayak was delivered and I had a chance to give it a test run yesterday evening.  It’s the Perception Outlaw 11.5.

Some initial thoughts:
    Transport:
    • Fits in the back of a pickup...  sticks out a ways, but not bad.  Only need one ratchet strap to hold it down. 
    • On a roof rack, it’s not quite as stable as I thought it would be as it has a centre ridge on the hull that is deeper than the ridges on the sides, so it balances on that centre ridge.  Stable enough despite that though.   Take extra care securing it if you’re taking it on a highway at speed.  Maybe I will seat it on some foam under the hull beside the centre ridge.
    On the water:
    • Slow - but this was expected as it is a very wide platform. 
    • Very stable.  I will wait until warmer weather and water to stand up in it...   but it’s very stable.
    • Tracks better than I thought it would.  Not too bad in the wind, despite a very upright and elevated seating position
    • Only operated by a kayak paddle.  Fancier ($$$) units will have a pedal propulsion system.

    Overall, I’m happy with it so far.  I’ll be taking it out fishing on a little lake this weekend to put it through its paces.  I’ll be meeting a buddy at the lake who is bringing his Hobie fishing kayak.  Maybe we’ll do an exchange at the lake for a comparison of boats.

Squid i never knew you could stand up in a kayak.

I've only ever been in a kayak once.  It was fun and much easier than rowing a canoe, and of course lighter to carry.  But also I got more wet from drips off the paddles as I paddled.  Is this normal?

The fishing kayaks are heavier, wider but more stable than a normal kayak. Also you sit upright on top, rather than sinking into one, and you can stand on many of them.  If you just want to cruise around calm waters, get a normal sit on top kayak. Multi-day trips, get a long touring kayak.   There are so many varieties and materials these days.

With drips, I think the ones where you sit low, like a touring kayak, you get less water coming off the paddles. But, tbh, this is the 1st kayak I’ve owned.  This one is very drippy. Goretex pants on non-hot days for sure.  I think Kimmy has mentioned kayaking...  she may know more about them.
