My review of the Orvis Coldwater 4# 10’ fly rod:

I’ve used the new fly rod a lot this summer.  My buddies and I have been doing really well on a couple rivers and the larger lakes catching rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and the odd dolly varden.

Most of the lakes are too warm this summer to produce any fish….  They simply become inactive because they, essentially, need to concentrate on getting enough oxygen and they hunker down as deep as they can, or leave if they can.  So fishing on the small-ish lakes has been very slow.

Luckily, we have several larger lakes and some rivers that have remained cool enough to be productive still.

We have been catching some cutthroat in the 2 to 4 pound range (and some smaller rainbows).  The cutthroat are at the river mouths feeding on rainbow trout fry that are entering the lakes.

The new rod has been fantastic.   Very easy to cast.  The extra length over a standard 9 foot rod is advantageous when fishing out of the kayak.

Here’s an actual fish caught by The Squid:  (maybe a 2 1/2 pound cutthroat).  I caught it on a pumpkin-head fly.  (Giving away secrets…)
