There's a stupid, snobby disdain for popularity, the kind of sneering refrain you find for rockers who 'sell out'. What the **** is the point of making movies anyway except to entertain people?
People make movies for different reasons. If you don't understand the difference between popular and excellent don't get mad at me and call me stupid or snobby. There are plenty of 'art' pictures I don't like or get and plenty of trash I love.
"Oh, my film is not to entertain, but to enlighten and to provoke thought about the grave injustices and ..." And **** you. I don't need you to make a movie to preach at me about how YOU think the world should be, not unless it's a damn good movie, like say Mississippi Burning, which also entertains.
Yeah, that one is 'ok'. Jeez, man, you will blow a gasket...
If I'm going to pay to watch the thing it better be entertaining or I'm not going. I can go to church if I want to get lectured and harangued - and guess what I don't go to church!
Lots of popular movies are preachy - like Mississippi Burning - and lots of art movies aren't.
You SHOULD go to church.
