Popular is a fact.
Popular doesn’t mean best. Best-selling, sure. Best art? Not necessarily.

What words ?  "Trash" ?  It's a term of endearment, and I am guessing you didn't know that and maybe didn't believe me.
It is a term of 'endearment' used by snobs who feel the need to rationalize their viewing choices to those who might think less of them because they like movies with certain characteristics. The word 'trash' allows someone to virtue signal by declaring that the movie is inferior on the movie snob mandated scale which means they should be forgiven for liking it.

And how does one determine objectively was the 'best art' is? The praise of people who happen to like certain styles of movies does not make it 'art' because art is inherently subjective.

Red Dawn wasn't the greatest but if you gave up the flawed premise there was a good flick in there.  If I only watched liberal movies I would have missed out ... is the point.

Sometimes the premise is too stupid to get over. Like Diehard 2.

His point was that quality can't be enumerated as easily as popularity, which I agree with.

Bullshit.  I loved trash before I loved art.  You don't know what you're talking about.

No.  Wrong.  It's a genre, like 'softcore porn' 'French New Wave' 'Wrestling Picture' 'Action Picture'.

You choose it like any other.  I have more disdain for Oscar-bait than trash any day.  Nothing makes me roll my eyes more than an Oscar-worthy big-star biopic with Southern racism as a theme.  If there's anything to be snobby about, it's that.

And speaking of snobby, isn't looking down your nose at didacticism snobbery too ?

?  I LOVED Die Hard 2 AND Die Hard 3.  Not trash, but popcorn action at its best.  What are you on about ?

Next thing you will be telling me that Mad Max is stupid.

Having the expanded Best Picture nominations list is nice also because it gives more exposure to more films.  One of the things that would come after the nominees were announced is renewed interest in the films and they would be put back into theatres and people would see them both before and after the awards, plus I'm sure it would spike home movie (VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray etc) sales.  I've seen 5 of the 9 nominated movies this year and hope to see 2 more I'm interested before the Oscars.  Kind of irrelevant since everyknows Three Billboards (or maybe Lady Bird) will win because of #MeToo.  Now nominees & awards are given out to please victim groups quotas, the Golden Globes was horrible...Oscars doesn't want bad PR from a #OscarsSoMale backlash this year.

Box office performance should be irrelevant to the nominees.  I think things have changed a bit since the big budget movies are usually sci-fi/fantasy/superhero films and sequels now, that's where studios put a lot of their money, and maybe less in epics like Dances With Wolves and Braveheart etc., and then they use smaller budgets to fund more artsy movies and dramas, which usually have better acting etc.

Personally who cares, a good movie is a good movie, awards for art are mostly meaningless anyways. It's just a fun show.
I can tell how good of a person you are by how you treat the people you disagree with.

Of the Best Picture nominees, so far I've seen:

“Darkest Hour” - 7.5/10 - WWII & Churchill hard to go wrong, solid but not a great movie
“Get Out” - 9.5/10 - fantastic film, best of 2017 I've seen
“Lady Bird” - 6.5/10 - meh, mildy entertaining
“Call Me by Your Name” - 5/10 - horrible movie, annoying characters (great scenery though), and nothing to do with the homosexual theme because Brokeback Mountain is one of my all-time fav movies. Artsy BS.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” - 8.5/10 - very entertaining, although a little too "preachy social justicey".

Want to see soon:
“Dunkirk”
“The Post”

Not much interest seeing:
“Phantom Thread” (though PT Anderson is a cool director)
“The Shape of Water”

Logan should have been nominated, one of the best 3 films I saw for 2017 (although too violent, and I'm a UFC fan!) - 9/10
I can tell how good of a person you are by how you treat the people you disagree with.

If you want to know how to evaluate art, you should look into it.

The whole premise of Diehard 2 was that all these aircraft could be held hostage to a few loonies at an airport. In Washington. The problem with this is there are a bunch of other airports locally, including military airports, which would have no problem landing those aircraft. All the cops had to do was call one of the other airports and tell them. Apparently this did not occur to anyone. ::)

It was a rhetorical question. Art is subjective and there is no real distinction between the "art" loved by small groups of people and the "art" loved by large groups of people. Nor is there is any reason to say that movies loved by small groups of people who have particular definition of what they call "art" are better than "art" in the form of mass marketed action films.

And you can only land on an airport without your instruments if there's path of fire lighting the way.

Spoiler?

Sure, from 25 years ago.

And the fire worked because all of those dozens of planes all used the same runway, dontcha know ?  Why were they doing it ?  Money ?
