On 'Liberal'

Some forget how the term is actually mocked by the left.  In Canada, the term 'Liberal' is really meaningless since our centrist party uses it for pretends.

When political discourse sees the name of an opposing viewpoint as a pejorative and use it as a weapon, there is no rational discussion to be had. What conversation is there to be had with someone who thinks "feminist," "social justice," or "liberal" are insulting? Those types have made it a political stance to stand for nothing and focus solely on opposition to something. It's a political ideology that is completely empty on the inside with only a facade of a philosophical stance. Opposition is not a foundation for a political stance. When everything is opposed, there is nothing to support; there is nothing to stand for.

That's a very apt description of the American right right now. They no longer stand for anything, they're only defined by what they're against.  Their only ideology is to make "the liberals" and "the feminists" and "the PC snowflakes" angry.

The American right is in favor of God and guns and against abortion and gays. Toss in an opposition to taxes and you have nearly their complete ideological toolbox.

At what, serving the country's interests or their own?

I read it and the question remains. What have these polarized label makers actually accomplished of their own?

Third time is the charm:

made "the liberals" and "the feminists" and "the PC snowflakes" angry."

It's an expression of anger... name calling... an act of insult.  That's all.

It's the reason I have lost interest in interacting with people who function on those terms.

That's a healthy and mature response.  I can't seem to let some of them alone, though, maybe because I was the kind of kid who burned ants with a magnifying glass.

It's difficult, sometimes I weaken and regret it.

Last week after Donald Trump retweeted the video clip of him beating up a person with "CNN" imposed over their face, the user who created the original image posted an apology that I thought was interesting.

https://archive.fo/CAzzg/scr.png

"...I was trollng and posting things to get a reaction from the subs on Reddit and never meant any of the hateful things I said in those posts.

( ...)

As time went on it became an addiction as to how far it could go with the posts that were made. This has been an extreme wake up call to always think of how others may think or feel before clicking the submit button..."

I think that they get a feeling of empowerment from getting people riled up.  You might be a sad loser who lives in his parents' basement but when you get online and put on your little MAGA cap and post your memes and people get mad at you, you feel powerful all of a sudden. You're not a sad internet troll, you're part of a movement that has everybody scared of you!

I think that the people who function on this level are actually no different from other internet trolls.

Sure, so it's not a discussion - it's a battle, in a larger war.  Next question is will it escalate to IRL violence, or will people tire of it and start to build bridges ?

Try going on youtube and typing in ANTIFA Trump and you'll see videos of the war in real life.
