Ode to Argus
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:40:22 pm »
I just came *close* to complimenting Argus on the big board.

In lieu of a shower, I propose we clink our glasses to him with only measured distaste and thank him for the years of thoughtful engagement.

This is all meant in good spirits.  Start a poll on me if this pisses you off, btw.

I think he's brilliant and there should be more like him. I'd vote that, but like most progressives you're not about to offer people a choice you disagree with!

He's actually one of the only tolerable conservatives in my opinion but he definitely needs to pay more taxes.

Too bad he's not on this board to read all this though.  ;)

I think posts like this should get a warning and be deleted.  Singling out a poster for ridicule shouldn't be allowed.

See my last two sentences, then slowly remove the stick.

The old "just joking" defence.

I actually might agree with you squid.  On the other hand, there's no Argus here, so I think we're good.

Overall, in my 13 or so years at MLW, I think Argus is the individual with which I have most ideological kinship.

When we do differ, which is often, it's seldom a matter of big ideological differences, and usually a matter closely aligned individuals bickering over the slightest details. Like how siblings bicker the most, even when they're the closest.

I think the biggest differences between me and Argus is that he says stuff out loud that I am only thinking, and that I aim for tact while he is content with blunt.

Can't decide whether I'd tax Argus or pinch him.  Voted pinch.

Indeed the big secret here is that our values are not that far apart.  When the big controversial issue is whether to restrict immigration somewhat, or make immigrants pledge to follow Canadian values it reveals that we're generally on the same page and that finger-pointing and name-calling is mostly ridiculous.

what held you back? BTW, what makes it sooooo big, anyways? Seems to me, as I recall, that big shytehouse only ever had the same ole, same ole, "handful" of regular posters - was that, is that... a big handful?  ;D

ya ya, that's the guy! That Argus guy was always a strong proponent for an unfettered, unrestricted, open-borders immigration policy... well, "somewhat" so, right? It was always heartening to read another Argus gem (ala the Fraser Institute, et al) assuredly making the case against immigration being needed to counter aging and low fertility rates while supporting future social program requirements. Notwithstanding the guys penchant for taking non-Canadian/non-American figures/conditions/events and liberally attaching them to North America. But ya, as you say, "generally on the same page"!  ;D
