Ozarks was ok, violent in parts, maybe a bit too predictable but I suppose at this point most things are.

I'd recommend Stranger Things and Jessica Jones, but they're not set in an office building and I know how you feel about things like that.

She's kind of a gem as a comedic actor but I am biased by my weird crush.

Ok - back to Netflix:

https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/80184834

Ryan Hamilton.  Never heard of him, but he's a phenomenal observational comic.  If you like Seinfeld, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one.  It seems to me he's even more precise with his words, and also clean as a whistle.

Ok, my thoughts on this Netflix announcement.  It's a great thing for Canadian 'content', on the face of it.  It could be exactly what we have needed for a long time: a producer with money, who knows how to make great product and find talent.

There's a wealth of great Canadian content out there, which CBC and CTV and film Canada have no idea how to cultivate.  There are amazing stand-up comedians, sketch troupes and drama companies that are either shepherded into mediocrity, or leave the business in their twenties.

Here's hoping.

Revising this.  I *listened* to this special in bed, didn't watch it.  It sounds a lot better than it looks.  He's young and his delivery is a little awkward.

Are you sure there are good Candian Comedians?  It's one of the most obvious dearths I noticed since emigrating back in '84.

Not counting your troupe, of course...

I think it's a fine deal.  It addresses this "Canadian content" dilemna without imposing a tax on we the consumer, which I'm all in favor of.  There's a fundamental issue of fairness-- Canadian entities like Bell and Shaw are required to spend money to produce Canadian content... now that this agreement is in place, Netflix will be doing the same.

I turned on my radio this morning and the first thing I heard was some professor on CBC pouting that $100 million a year is actually chump change because Netflix spends several billion dollars a year creating content.  Well screw that guy. $100 million per year is not chump change regardless of who's spending it.

I wouldn't take Netflix' involvement as any guarantee of quality. Some of it will be good and some of it won't.   "Letterkenny" turned out to be CraveTV's biggest hit; I expect that Netflix will manage to find a similar gem, and hopefully several.

Yes, Canada has a core of amazing stand-ups.  You not being aware of that is part of the problem of Canadian culture not being cultivated properly.

1. Yes, I have been reading that since I posted this.  I didn't realize it was $100M a year, I thought it was $500M.  Still, it depends on what they do with that money.

2. There have been a handful of 'hits' over the past decade.  They have come off either by accident, or because somebody kicked the door in and got themselves into the Cable landscape.  Netflix will be better than, say, the CBC has been over the past 40 years.

They own the rights to Trailer Park Boys. I wonder if this money is in addition to what they already produce.

I doubt it.  But you have hit on maybe the biggest hit of the past 20 years - one that the CBC PASSED on btw.

Did I ever tell you the story of running into the kid who liked TPB, on my way to Burning Man ?  I was renting a bike from him for the week, beside the windswept desert highway 447 in the middle of nowhere Nevada.  After we concluded our transaction he said: "Do you guys watch Trailer Park Boys ?".  I told him we did, and he said "You guys talk like them."  Probably had no idea what Canada was but he knew that show.

Also a Burner that I met from England told me that he saw them LIVE in the U.K. somewhere.

This Canadian culture thing has economic potential, eh.
