Oof.  Sounds tough.  I may check it out.

We visited a camp when we were in Poland. This had my wife in tears.

I read Viktor Frankel's book about his experiences in the camps.  I have seen a few films and documentaries.

Living through current times it's easy to see how it could happen.

I agree. What we see going on in the US and things like Brexit are disturbingly similar to the 1930’s.

I agree to a degree...  there are many, many people that would actually love a fascist to take charge and get those pesky “enemies of the state”, or whatever they would call them.

But there are certainly more protections in place in the USA and GB to avoid the tyranny from completely subverting democracy in the way it happened in 1930s Europe.  Even when a tyrannical-wannabee wins, they are limited in the damage they can do.

We still don't know how much damage Trump will do before he leaves or how much damage Trumpism will do in future. Right now the US democratic system is badly compromised. A system that was supposed to have so many checks and balances such a thing would be impossible.

Right now our system seems more resilient that the US but that's maybe because it evolved over the 700+ years since Magna Carta instead of being made up by a bunch of guys over beers in the late 18th century. Even so, the populism that brought about  Brexit and is endangering the Union itself should be a warning that we can't feel too complacent.

What is destroying Europe is opinions such as these.  "Endangering the Union itself" LOL.  Do you understand exactly what the EU is and what it does, how it functions, and what it makes people in EU countries accept?  Equating Brexit to Nazism... ???   That's like equating universal healthcare to Communism.

I suppose there is no reasonable alternative between leftism and Thatcherism?  Any populism (non-globalism, non-elitism) is therefore Nazism?

Germany was being hard done by and then the depression happened.  The problem is they blamed the wrong people and elected racist genocidal warmongering totalitarian maniacs to solve the problem.  Trump is a racist totalitarian maniac, luckily for Americans he wasn't genocidal or warmongering.  Some Brexiters are racist, but hardly any of them are genocidal, warmongering, totalitarian, or maniacs.  Get rid of the racists and you have yourself some good policy.  Call them all racists and you have what we have now.

What I agree with you on is that those Polish death camps are lessons to be learned.  One of them is that if you rub people's face in the mud enough they'll start to resent, hate, and rage.

I was referring to the Union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The EU will be fine without the UK.

The EU is a response to Nazism, Make the countries of Europe so interdependent that such a thing can't happen again.

People yearn to the be free and have self-determination instead of being controlled by a central or foreign power of "outsiders".  Scots, Northern Ireland and IRA, Quebec and FLQ, al-Qaeda and ISIS, Pakastanis/Sikhs/Hindus/Bangladeshi, Shiites/Sunnis/Kurds, Jews, Palestinians, Hutu and Tutsi, and 1930's Germans and Italians.

The EU was designed to increase corporate profits.  It's largely a neoliberal project, not a security pact.  The US colonies and also Canadian provinces formed a country as a security pact.  NATO was too busy fighting the USSR/commies to worry about each other.

The EU is security pact in that its intention is to prevent conflicts between its members. The 75 years since WW2 is the longest period in history without a conflict between European countries. It has NATO for outside aggressors.

Your often repeated ideology is a conflicting interest to China's brilliantly devised method of providing for the hundreds of millions or the world's growing number of billions!

The 21st. century only has room for one political ideology in the near future.

A scale of wealth will have to be confined to perhaps no more than ten or so times that of the bottom compared to that of the top. and looking further into the future, maybe even less!

Not the US scale of hundreds or thousands of times different.

Not Neflix.

Apple+ - Bruce Springsteen’s “A Letter to You”.   Absolutely brilliant.  A documentary of the making of his latest album.  The man is a once in a generation talent.  An American treasure.

Poetic and poignant...   this is a brilliant behind the scenes look at a great rock ‘n’ roll and singer/song-writer talent.

Filmed in black & white, the cinematography is great, but more importantly the mixing/production of this documentary is amazing.  Play it on a good sound system.  You’ll love it.

Don't remember if I posted this before but on the US Netflix is a docudrama series called "The Last Czars" about, you guessed it, Tsar Nicholas II and his downfall and death.

I enjoyed it'

On Prime

The Great.

A comedy drama on the rise of Catherine the Great. Funny, bloody, raunchy and as it says, sometimes factual.
Dakota Fanning's younger sister Elle is amazing as young Catherine.

Looking forward to season two, whenever they can get it done.

There were some great things in that show.  One of my favourites of the year for sure.

Netflix has "Death to 2020" which made me laugh.
