Watched two Netflix Documentaries this morning, found both very interesting.

Social Dilemma - how social media is impacting society and the forces behind it.  Features people who've worked at FB, Google and other similar companies.

Capital in the Twenty-First Century.  Traces the history and impact of wealth, power and inequality for the last 300 years, where we are now and where we could go in the future.  Based on a book by Thomas Piketty, a French economist.

I like the idea of those documentaries but I have a feeling I wouldn't learn anything.

Just finished "I'm thinking of ending things..." which is a Charlie Kaufman product.  If you like his brand of surrealism then it's must-see.  If you like ANY surrealism, then I guess it's must-see because not enough of that stuff gets made but maybe more than in the past.

It was... 'ok'.

Most documentaries these days are op-ed pieces in video form, but don't include links to make it easy to factcheck.

As soon as a documentary starts trying to convince me of some point I turn it off.

We finished watching this a while back. The conclusion was as startling as the opening, and it was a wild trip.  They recently finished filming season 2,  and I'll be there when it arrives.

Season 2 of "The Boys" is now on Amazon Prime. I haven't started watching it yet, but the final minutes of season 1 were stunning and I can hardly wait to see what's next.

Season 3 of American Gods is supposed to be out sometime this year.  Disenchantment is supposed to be back on Netflix before the end of 2020 as well.  The Mandalorian season 2 is supposed to arrive in October. Looking forward to all of those.

It's worth watching, the Gem app is free if you are willing to put up with adds.

You decide. I think our inner **** surfaces occasionally in all of us but for some it is a full time occupation.

Weird, this program censors the word ahole singular but any variation like the plural ****, seems to be OK.

https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/81254224

I haven't been interested in the topic of technological threats to our social fabric.  I guess because I'm IN it so much, I don't think it would be interesting.  But I heard an interview with the guy who made this - The Social Dilemma - and he articulates it in a much broader, meta-type way that I found interesting.  It kind of hung the current climate together with the evolution of communication in general.  ( The interview was with Sam Harris btw)

Anybody seen it ?

Not Netflix.  Apple+

Greyhound with Tom Hanks.  99% of the movie takes place on the bridge of a ship during WWII.  I liked it.  Intense.   It was like watching Das Boot but from the Allies’ perspective.  ****/5

Another interesting short doc I ran across on the Guardian site

About a young writer who takes a 92 year old woman to the concentration camp where her brother died. They were both in the French resistance as children. He was caught and sent to a slave labour camp where they were building V2 rockets. He died three weeks before the camp was liberated. She had vowed never to go to Germany but this young woman changed her mind and it turned out to be a journey for both of them. It's only 25 minutes and if you are interested in that part of history, well worth a look. She really was one of the Greatest Generation.
