Netflix Recommendations
Michael Hardner:
I like Netflix but sometimes it's hard to find good stuff on there. I'm posting this thread to recommend a few things I liked in case you're out of options. These are for Netflix Canada. If you recommend, please indicate if you're talking about Netflix USA or elsewhere.
Drama
American Crime
- Quality network TV show that dedicates 1 season to the police investigation of a crime with a sociological lens. Focusses on the reaction of the community around the crime. Also, they use the same actors in different roles for each season.
Bloodline
- A successful Florida Keys family reunites when the black sheep returns. The black sheep is a criminal and the oldest son is a local cop. The first two seasons represent a Master Class of acting. Ben Mendelsohn is unbelievable as Danny Rayburn, the black sheep. Be warned though: each of the first two seasons starts out VERY slowly for the first half or so then the plot speeds up and builds. Season 3 was a disappointment but they did end it, albeit in a very unsatisfactory way.
The Bridge
- Like Bloodline, it's better in the first two seasons than the third but if you get hooked you'll want to watch Season 3. It's a Swedish-Danish buddy-cop movie wherein the mismatched lead investigators inspect a supervillain a la "Seven". Subtitles.
Palo Alto
- Screwed up entitled kids in the suburbs. Realistically done, and validates anyone's suspicions of the decline of society.
Dark Drama (Strong Stuff - Dark & Cringy)
The Salvation
- Mads Mikkelsen in a brutal Western. It's about a Swedish immigrant coming to the Old West with his family. I think it's even a Swedish production so it's an odd but satisfying blend of American western (including the stunning landscapes) and dour Swedish filmmaking style. If you can take it, this is excellent.
The Hunt
- Mads Mikkelsen again. This guy is so amazing. My wife got to work with him on an episode of Hannibal and I was so jealous she got to meet him. In this, he's a teacher falsely accused of molesting an elementary school child and the community comes down on him and slowly dissembles his life. Brutal.
Donald Cried
- If you're from a small town, there's a thing that happens when you go back and you run into people that you don't want to run into. They know you, and though you have changed they haven't. This is maybe the cringiest film ever made as the protagonist returns from New York to tend to his deceased grandmother's affairs and has to depend on his old high-school friend Donald. Donald's life has been a wash-out and he pleads and tricks the protagonist into hanging around so they can 'party'.
Stand-Up Comedy
-John Mulaney - Comeback Kid
-Hannibal Buress
-LouisCK 2017 (or any Louis CK)
-Jim Gaffigan Mr. Universe (kind of like a greatest hits. Mostly clean comedy, which I like.
-Norm MacDonald - Hitler's Dog (he's one of the greats)
Weird & Surreal (My Favourite Genre)
Black Mirror
- British series, kind of like a Twilight Zone type thing. Very well done anthologies.
Futurama
- This is some of the craziest, loopiest writing ever. See this:

The Lobster
- Surreal future society where it's illegal to be single. Darkly funny.
Comedy
Why Him?
- They take the lamest premise (father doesn't like new potential son-in-law) and play it to the hilt with great jokes and great actors.
What We Do in the Shadows
- Fake documentary of how vampires live. It includes some of the Flight of the Conchords guys. Very funny.
I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore
- Screwball caper, with Elijah Wood proving he will have an acting career post-Lord of the Rings
This is the End
- Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and a lot of cameos playing a version of themselves living through a Hollywood Party where the biblical apocalpyse happesn.
Butter
- Unfair skewering of Republican midwesterners covers a Butter sculpting showdown between a Laura Bush type lady and a 10-year old black foster child girl. Alternately mean, playful and overly sweet. The critics didn't like it but I thought it was fun.
Queefer Sutherland:
I would highly recommend Wentworth (TV series). It's a female prison drama, but not a comedy like Orange Is The New Black. It's an Australian production so there's no marketing/promo for it over here but it's so good. Rated 8.7/10 on IMDB.com
I'm really picky with TV shows, I get really bored with shows that are too much filler. I find there's a lot of TV drama shows these days that drag out a story that should take 3-4 episodes to tell and drag it out over a full season. There's so much filler. A season of 12 episodes is around 10-12 hours long, you can tell a ton of story with that, that's 6 full movies worth of story. I found Homeland very draggy like that, and House of Cards has become like that. I don't like having my time wasted, to sit & watch a show for 12 hours that's hardly going anywhere showing me sub-plots about annoying supporting characters I don't give a **** about. Game of Thrones is really well-paced, hard to get bored. Well Wentworth is like this too, the story is always moving, keeps my attention but also explores characters.

I enjoyed the Broadway production of Newsies. Those fellows can really dance.

Wentworth was too dour for me.
House of Cards is just a dumb show.
