I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber's work from what I've seen, so I never bothered to see Phantom.
Whether people like it all depends on whether there is pure genius involved in the production. A musical about a founding father that incorporates elements of hip-hop and modern vernacular would be absolutely terrible in most people's hands. But Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius. You have to see it to get it, and it's so good that the more times you watch, the more you get.
