Ok, my thoughts on this Netflix announcement.  It's a great thing for Canadian 'content', on the face of it.  It could be exactly what we have needed for a long time: a producer with money, who knows how to make great product and find talent.

I think it's a fine deal.  It addresses this "Canadian content" dilemna without imposing a tax on we the consumer, which I'm all in favor of.  There's a fundamental issue of fairness-- Canadian entities like Bell and Shaw are required to spend money to produce Canadian content... now that this agreement is in place, Netflix will be doing the same.

I turned on my radio this morning and the first thing I heard was some professor on CBC pouting that $100 million a year is actually chump change because Netflix spends several billion dollars a year creating content.  Well screw that guy. $100 million per year is not chump change regardless of who's spending it.

I wouldn't take Netflix' involvement as any guarantee of quality. Some of it will be good and some of it won't.   "Letterkenny" turned out to be CraveTV's biggest hit; I expect that Netflix will manage to find a similar gem, and hopefully several.
