5 signs you have a GREAT project manager:

https://www.cio.com.au/article/577425/5-signs-great-project-manager/

I'm passionate about management.  There is so much mismanagement and disorganization in Canada that I encounter and it brings me down.

Who here works on projects ?  Operations ?  Share.

I saw someone else post this article on another website. I have as little interest in it now as I did then. Sorry, friend.

Wow, this topic got no love at all.

I worked in government for a decade and a half. Most of my encounters with management were incredibly frustrating due to my innate desire to get things done and their innate desire to cover their fat asses and make sure they never got blamed for anything. Projects were even worse. I got handed a project once which made sooo much sense. Then I found out the project had been ongoing for two years and made no progress. Why? You needed buy-in from a vast group of people, none of whom were willing to commit time to do any work other than attend meetings. Why? Because while the project would benefit the whole agency, and in fact, the whole country, nobody wanted to be the one paying for it. The cost wasn't much, but even so, every directorate and every branch said "Why should I pay for it?" So I duly wrote up a detailed business plan, did lots of research, attended lots of meetings, and then handed it off to someone else when I got promoted a couple of years later. Meh. They're probably still puttering along. It was a project, incidentally, to use information in our computers to warn us of possible identity theft, which was then and remains a growing problem for the agency.

My friend at the RCMP spent three years working on a project they regarded as extremely important and put a lot of resources into. Then senior management changed and they decided to yank the budget.

not unusual, at all. Many new 'managementByMagazine' types implement their latest visionary magazineMagic when taking over - stakeholders, smmakeholders!

I'm a Project Manager for a software company.  Good article.  I printed it off.  Thank you.

I've only been doing it about 2 years for this company and had never done it before.  It's been hard because when I was brought in, I was told they were having major internal staffing issues and Hoo Boy!  This is a difficult group to work with. :-\

But I did get 3 of their stalled projects off the ground and running.  And just got handed a new project which will be 2-3 years.  So I guess I have a job for the next 2-3 years.

Wow.  Lots of experience here and I am looking forward to this topic now.

Not for today, though, heading out of town.  Funemployment, woo !

This perfectly sums up working for the federal government.

Some seem to go it alone. The preferred standard is PMI best practices. The one commonality is senior management seems to not have a clue about how any of it works.

Wow.  I would think PMI is the best fit.

Got an email this morning from one of our BC clients:

"Hey guys!  Great  job with the HOG Creation Report!  Apparently <<our company's>> Report is the only one that is downloading to the province's e-Tax portal correctly.  All others are getting errors in teh download.  Thanks for all your hard work on this one!"

This was one of my projects   :)

I'm happy when clients are happy.  This is my satisfaction.

Great pat on the back ?

I'm getting lots of nice LinkedIn recommendations from my former team.  I am frankly surprised they liked me that much.  They were very reserved Indian kids.

Yes, a needed pat on the back.  It's been a difficult team to work with (I was told it would be).  Some staff have been here 15 years and resent new people tremendouslyand the rest of the staff are family....you can imagine the fun.  ::)

LinkedIn is a great resource.

I think some team members balk at being "led" but in the end when a project turns out good, on time and within budget, everybody's happier and proud of the project.
