Just For Fun
« on: December 11, 2019, 01:39:57 am »
I thought I'd give this a try. I need to get a picture of a Kawasaki 750, a Cessna 337, a birch bark canoe, and a parachute. Then I'll ask y'all to tell the rest about things you did, "Just for fun"

Yeah I seem to recall that in my day that trio of growing up events all occurred around the same time. Didn't get to do the theater so much other than when midway through a law class I took in my senior year in high school I was chosen to be the defense attorney in a fake murder case we eventually staged in the school auditorium in front of the whole school. The jury (12 classmates) decided to acquit so maybe I should have pursued a career in law. Oh well, it was all fun, complicated from time to time, but still fun.

Wow.  That does sound fun.  The two funnest things I did after 50 yrs old were the Honest Ed's goodbye party, thrown by the city of Toronto for an iconic old store, and carnival barking at Burning Man.... or Burning Man in general.

I loved Honest Eds. My mom used to take me there around this time of year when I was a kid, and give me a couple of bucks to do my Xmas shopping. Wool socks for Gramps, chocolates for Nana, and then a little bit left for candy canes. Even got to meet Ed Mirvish one of those times. All fun.

Something else I and a buddy decided to try "for fun" was to jump out of an airplane. We took training in TO and then went out to Arthur Ont. where there was a grass strip in a farm field and a Cessna 180 with only one seat in it. (For the pilot of course) It turned out the pilot that day was a friend I had trained with some time prior. As I crawled my way toward the hole in the right side of theat plane were there used to be a door, that pilot poked me and yelled words to the effect of "you're a GDed pilot, you're supposed to stay in the plane". I yelled back words to the effect of "I knew you were flying today so that's why I brought my chute" I crawled out and the jump master slapped me on the leg and away I went. It was quite a ride and a lot of fun. The following 6 weeks in a cast to mend a broken ankle after landing in a frozen plowed field with no snow on it 4 days before Xmas, not so much. At least the damn chute opened.

I didn't know how to flag that so went with the latter.

Generally you can change, but occasionally I have posts I have rated that don't allow me to change them. Some strange intermittent bug.

I had the good fortune, and the ability I hasten to add, to become a "Cardinal" whilst over nighting in the lovely little community of Makkovik up on the Labrador coast. Qualifying for that prestige requires some concentration and some Scotch, preferably single malt. One must first of all state "I drink to the health of Cardinal Puff for the first time". Then clap ones hands once, fold ones arms once, stand up and sit back down once, and then take a healthy sip of whiskey once. Then proceed to number two, which is like number one only you do everything twice. Then you get to thrice, and you're done. However if you err at any point you must start over and as you do your glass will be refilled. I made it but not the first time around. If you wish to address me as Cardinal feel free to do so. I am qualified.

If you only do it twice, are you a Bishop?
How many times to become Pope?

I made it to Cardinal and then I had to go back to Toronto so I'm not sure what could have come next. I did import some Screech though.

I got challenged one time by a friend who said I was too lazy to accompany her to a local karate dojo. I couldn't let that lay so off I went, just for fun. Stayed as a member for 3 years, earned a number of belts, made a lot of friends, and I can count to 10 in Japanese in my sleep.

I used to want to do that - jump out of an airplane.

Then I jumped off the Stratosphere in Vegas.  It's not REALLY a jump, more of a "controlled" let-down - you slow down as you reach the bottom.

Glad I did it, but not sure I need to do it again now.
