Sure, but what's the relevance to this discussion?

You brought it up...

What ?

'Agreement' between parties.  Not really that difficult to figure out.

So you're expecting 100% agreement?  I'm gonna disagree just to be ornery.

So freedom of speech just for those who play nice?

Doesn't quite get to the nub of the matter, for me.

Yes, if you’re going to disagree “just to be ornery”, then your opinions are completely meaningless.

I remember 20 years ago Stockwell Day getting protested at Brock University and Benjamin Netanyahu getting protested at Concordia University (which ended up terribly with protestors trashing property).

The 60's were most famous for university protesting.

Why should today be any different?  They're a bunch of young idealists.

They'll mature like we all did.

Only an idiot would try to work with a liar or a bullshitter.

Yes, if you’re going to disagree “just to be ornery”, then your opinions are completely meaningless.

The meaning of opinions doesn't matter. What matters is the freedom to express them.

So long as they still have freedom of speech, it doesn't matter who works with them.

I agree.  They can hang out in a corner and rant to themselves.  I will find someone who disagrees with me, with some principles.

Back to where I was before you promised to bullshit me...

"How would we know, exactly, if this is news or just more attention to something that has been happening forever ?"

It's not new.  The point of free speech is what exactly?

-People should have the opportunity to say their views, because stating an idea should not be a crime.  The government shouldn't use force to shut me up.
-Some crazy ideas are actually good ones, that potentially are unpopular with those in power.

-- What are the limits ?  ie. What ideas ? How much audience ?  How much time ?  What venues ?  What media ?

If we dive into the details here, we can assure that free speech is allowed, by thinking about WHY we want it.

I think I probably misunderstood you.  I thought you said that certain people should decide on what free speech is allowed.

No.  We all generally agree in 'free speech' but at a certain point, disagreements come up between certain groups... a division.  Trying to answer the questions I posted might provide clarity and guidance.

Or we could fight forever.

I like the US limits.  Any ideas, as you already stated.  The rest don't matter, as they depend on others who can also exercise their freedom of speech by not showing up or counterprotesting.

It depends what you mean by OK.  It depends on the difference between illegal and stupid.  It's legal for a University to ban speakers based on their speech, but pretty stupid, on a sliding scale.  While I would advocate allowing anything, banning David Duke would not be as big a disservice to one's students as banning Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
