I recall Trudeau the elder skipping debates when he was way out in front. It's not a right/left issue, though you seem determined to make every issue a right/left issue.

Do you have any examples from the past 40 years?   ::)

So what is in a political leaders curriculum?

Obviously a lot of political science, history, law, economics, governmental structures, labour relations, management, some accounting, communications, speaking skills, etc.

Not calling you a liar but I am curious about this, as I don't remember that at all.

It was the election against Joe Clark. Clark had beat him and was the minority PM. Trudeau was actually getting set to exist stage left, having resigned as Liberal leader, but only months into Clark's tenure his government, through a series of political errors, had become very unpopular. The Liberals, NDP and SC scented blood and pushed him into another election due to the famous gas tax. The Liberals ran a campaign which basically said the gas tax would end civilization as we knew it, and kept Trudeau - still highly unpopular - out of sight as much as possible, refusing to debate Clark, and suggesting that as soon as the Liberals got elected he would give way to a successor.  Showing his cynicism he stayed for four more years, and he almost immediately implemented the gas tax - only a bigger gas tax than the Tories had planned. As for the SC, the Torys' erstwhile minority partners, who voted against them and precipitated the election, they were wiped out, to never rise again.

If you check the CBC site which shows election debates going back as far as they have a record, you'll note there is one in 1979 and two in 1984, but nothing for the 1980 election.

One could say that Clark thought he could get away with anything because the Liberals would not defeat his budget since Trudeau had already resigned party leadership and they wouldn't want to risk an election.

Ah.  Well I don't remember that however I do remember that Trudeau was never on stage without his 'team' and the Liberals' attempt to hide him in the crowd.

I found this interesting and dramatic in the way real life can be. It's from a documentary which was being made on a trauma hospital in London last year., St. Mary's. It starts during a routine meeting of hospital execs, which is interrupted when they're put on notice of a 'major incident' at Westminster Bridge and that they will be receiving a number of trauma cases. It goes through how they organize for it, the reception and treatment of the injured, and then how the injured recover, both physically and emotionally.

Walking around Yanaka, an older neighbourhood of Tokyo, on a windy evening, starting in the cemetary.

Another from Tokyo, the Shibuya district. As different from the first as night and day - or night and night.  Before long you notice there are no overweight people here, no old people, virtually no middle aged people, no one dressed in a slovenly way. No garbage but no garbage cans either.

The evolutions of gay (men) in sitcoms.  The role of the sitcom in social facilitation is widely understated IMO.

Thanks Cosby !  Oh, wait... errr....

A few years ago when I was working for a German boss, he made a joke referencing a ridiculous little German car.   He was disappointed that I had no idea what he was talking about.

"I really don't have time... but in interest of furthering your education I feel obligated to inform you of this."   He brought me behind his desk, did some quick searching on his laptop, and showed me pictures of a little car with a fridge door on the front.  I was reminded of that today when I saw this video, which demonstrates that having a fridge door on the front only scratches the surface of what a ridiculous vehicle this is.

Behold... the BMW Isetta!

The Isetta. Believe it or not you used to see the odd one on the road during the sixties.

My dad had one of these for a while when I was a kid. Don't know where he found it and I've never seen another. He sold it to a young guy who said he was taking it to Quebec. Not driving it I hope but back then you never knew. It differed from the Isetta in that it was a tricycle with only one rear wheel.

The Germans built a few bubble cars after the war when they were trying to get their industry back up and running. Heinkel of course was an aircraft manufacturer and Messerschmitt was another which built a tricycle but with tandem seating like an aircraft.

I was over on Galliano Island for a bit of a summer holiday one time and as we were driving around one of these boys came around the corner. When I got back to the cabin I had rented the owner explained there was a car show going on that weekend. Went down and sure enough found the Tatra parked and got the lowdown as to how they were produced by aviation engineers after the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia. I even got to go for a ride.

After the 1938 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany, Tatras were kept in production, largely because Germans liked the cars. Many German officers died in car accidents caused by driving the heavy, rear-engined Tatras faster around corners than they could handle. At the time, as an anecdote, Tatra became known as the 'Czech Secret Weapon' for the scores of officers who died behind the wheel; at one point official orders were issued forbidding German officers from driving Tatras
