Interesting videos
« on: July 10, 2018, 03:41:35 pm »
We have a subject called "Weird, fun videos" but this doesn't seem to fit. I do find it interesting, though, so thought I'd start a new subject for the other 'interesting' videos I come across.

It's an interview on British TV. The man being interviewed is a Tory backbencher I'd never heard of who has apparently made a name for himself for his conservative views (a bit too conservative for me) and his well-spoken and fearless manner. He's being spoken of as a possible future Tory leader, perhaps even the next one.

What I like about this is what I seldom see in Canadian political interviews. First, it's not two minutes long. So it's much harder for the politician to make bland statements that mean nothing. Second, he is challenged, and when he brushes it off, challenged again, repeatedly, on his social views. The interviewer isn't rude, but forthright and determined. Third, he is forthright in his answers, intelligent, sophisticated, and very firm in a way I rarely see from Canadian politicians. He makes a clear case that his religious views are well known, but his own, and that he does not see himself changing laws to suit his Catholicism(Abortion, gay marriage) because this would not reflect the public's clear preferences. He's clearly an extremely intelligent and articulate man - again something I rarely seem to see here. Btw, ignore the clickbait title. There's no destroying going on.

Huge waves take out a jet ski and almost its two occupants, until lifeguards jump in after them.

Trevor Philips discusses the things about race everyone knows but we aren't allowed to talk about. And how he slowly came to the conclusion we were dividing ourselves into separate tribes by race and ethnicity, living separate lives with different values and beliefs.

The backbencher Tory is simply explaining tolerance.  It's very sad that so many people don't understand it.  It's worse that people are exploiting intolerance for political gain, both left and right.

I guess what impressed me was how skillfully he explained it and how articulate he was in doing so. And his matter of fact attitude when asked if he would like to change the law on abortion, where he said that of course he would but unless there was a marked change in societal values that was simply not going to happen. He treated the idea that he would try to foist off his religious based values onto the public against the public's will as if it wasn't something that would ever even occur to him to try, and he could barely understand why anyone would even suggest otherwise. And he did it quite convincingly. I can see why people are impressed with him and talking about him as a possible leadership candidate.

Hopefully we're not dumb enough to fight the women's health rights war again. That nonsense belongs in Trumpville.

That wasn't the point. The point was the interviewer was suggesting that his holding such religious based view might rule him out as a possible leader. Yet most religions have views which most non-believers would regard as preposterous or silly, and I doubt non-Christians would be on the receiving end of such a suggestion by the media.

First, I think you are referring to the wrong video. Second, what exactly was racist about what was said?

Great program, an interesting exploration of a number of increasingly pertinent topics by a well-spoken, thoughtful guy who is clearly on the side of social justice but is also concerned about where the dialogue is heading.

Perhaps a better question for Phillips would have been whether the path to progress requires us to actually partake in the soul-searching that political correctness originally intended. Not to say, as Phillips did in his Daily Mail article, that because of political correctness, he was not surprised to be called a racist even as a black man. But instead to accept how deeply sad it is that as people of colour, we can hold racist views ourselves. That we, too, might make judgments about how much more “competent” a white candidate seems for a role, because the image of success we are so often fed is prepackaged in a white, male, heterosexual form.

The question is not whether political correctness is mad, but whether its binary distinction between “correct” and “incorrect” doesn’t allow us to have an ongoing discussion about all of the grey areas in between.

Agree with your assessment but it's sad to me that we need someone to teach us what we already know.  And would he even have a chance ?

What do "we already know"?  His message isn't that these things are true even though polite society won't talk about them. It's that refusing to talk about them has harmful consequences. He talks about the Rotherham scandal, which we've talked about here at length, and  how fear of causing racial tension was one of the prime factors  in allowing the crime to continue as long as it did.   He talked about failure of integration contributing to the homegrown British radicals that carried out the subway attack.  Multiculturalism works and people integrate are progressive dogma, but Philips asks whether that's really true in a society where at the end of the work day people go home to these ethnic enclaves-- "sunset segregation", he called it... something that we see happening here in Canada as well.

If one wanted to have a Canadian version of Philips' discussion, a good place to start might be in regard to gang related crime in Toronto.

A little girl got shot in a park, and Mayor Tory vowed to bring the "sewer rats" responsible to justice. "Hey, that's racist! Apologize to black people!" cried an activist, even though Tory had said nothing about race and the race of the suspects was not yet known at that point.   The activist knew, and Tory probably knew as well, what race the suspects were going to be.   There's this weird dichotomy right now, where you can't talk about a racial aspect to criminal activity, and yet having information about racial dimensions to criminal activity is important for community groups and government agencies trying to create preventative measures to combat the problem that nobody is supposed to talk about.

MH was talking about the first video, the one featuring a British Conservative party MP, and not the one by Trevor Philips. I agree that was Phillips principle message.

Yes, and I think this is one of the most important points he had to make. That if we allow ourselves to settle into individual 'nations' where people don't encounter anyone outside their own culture, we fail to identify with each other, and start seeing each other as 'the other'. This is particularly bad when those ghettos consist of individuals who immigrated from countries with social values and views hostile to our own.

There are, in the UK, a number of schools where the great majority of the student body are Muslim Asians, for example. If a child is raised in a Muslim Asian enclave, with the social values of their homeland, goes to school alongside mostly other Muslim Asian kids, goes to mosque, and comes home to play in his Muslim Asian enclave, just how much ability is he or she going to have to see eye to eye with those who grow up in 'mainstream' areas with entirely different social values or views? He will not adopt their ways, but will hold to views hostile to theirs. And this is the grounds from which extremism spring.

This is a second important note. Yes, you're not allowed to observe the ethnic nature of crime in Canada. The media won't report on it, and if you bring it up people will call you names. I do bring it up, and the usual suspects here call me names for doing so. Yet as Phillips points out, you need to acknowledge it in order to address it.

The media constantly talks about 'gangs' and 'youth crime' as if it had no ethnic dimension. If they ever acknowledge any it's to suggest gangs are from all races. But we all know they're mostly brown people from specific ethnic groups. When a feel-good story about a youth community center for Somali youth was published a year or so back, the reporter honestly, and probably mistakenly let slip the tidbit that half the youth in custody at the Ottawa regional detention centre were Somalians. That's not a factum you'll ever see reported in a story on crime or youth violence.

The activist knew, and Tory probably knew as well, what race the suspects were going to be.

and, as you say, "probably so knowing", Tory chose to use the dehumanizing "sewer rats" label... the broader stereotype triggering "vermin"! So helpful. By the by, has Tory similarly labelled the (alleged) serial killer "body in planters" dude? Wait, he's white... carry on...
