Would it not be possible to have a rating system like for films? (X, R, PG, etc)

So you rate things, then what?

Who is going to do the rating?
Who is going to pay for it?
What dispute mechanism will be put in place?

So you rate things, then what?

Then parents use internet blocking by ratings category for their kids.

I don't really know, but it's worth discussing.

Seems like it would be really hard.  A TV channel or studio puts out dozens of shows at a time.  Something like Youtube gets its content from its users which upload gazillions of videos a day.  Content would have to be rated by AI.  They already make you sign in if it's flagged as adult content.  Google has option to restrict adult images in search, again very likely done by AI.

I don't see this as a massive problem.  Anything on the web illegal, like people planning terrorism, would probably be watched by authorities anyways, again with help of AI.

Sure it's a massive problem, but one that needs to be addressed. There didn't used to be movie ratings either.

Kids used to hide X-rated magazines under their mattresses too. Nothing is perfect.

Taking another tack ... I think we need to get much more aggressive about monitoring and policing online propaganda that promotes hatred or violence against groups of people ... as I believe we already do with importing books, etc ... but that's only the law in Canada vs the world wide web.

Parents can monitor a child's browsing history, regardless of what room the child is in. Reviews/ratings of websites would be helpful in that.

It is a matter of scale. There are around 800 movies released annually, that is about 1500 hours of film to rate. On youtube there are over 300 hours to rate every minute, or about 5 minutes you have exceeded the movie total. That means on youtube alone you have over 100,000 times the scale to deal with. Also note that MPAA (US) ratings are voluntary, paid for by the studios. In Canada, I believe several provinces pay into a government rating system. From what I understand Newfoundland has no rating system, and Saskatchewan uses the BC ratings.

Have you folks ever heard of the lengths Facebook went to, to moderate content on their platform ?

People were getting PTSD... truly impossible.

I would make it illegal to have anonymous content, in my country.  Otherwise you have trolls and bots everywhere.

And anyway, wouldn't it be better for advertisers to know your audience is 100% real ?

Since when did throwing up your hands and saying you can't do anything become a solution or an excuse?  If these platforms can't police themselves, they need to rethink their business model. Facebook, Youtube and these other entities don't have some divine right to exist.

You are not asking them to police themselves, you are asking them to police the general public.

It's their platform, they are responsible for what goes on it. Why should they be immune from the same standards as other MSM?

They are not publishers, that is a world of difference. They are simply a bulletin board in the local supermarket or laundromat.

Including documentaries, academic and artistic film? Music videos?
I believe all are subject to ratings for importation?

And I may be speculating, but don't producers apply the rating criteria ... with checks of some kind?

That's a cop out, they are muti billion dollar business, not bulletin boards. Even bulletin board owners are accountable for what is posted.
