What's with the ashes and cricket? I know what cricket (or Krikkit) is from reading "Life the Universe and Everything" but I don't understand about the ashes, or what they are in fact (besides the by product of burning wood of some sort).

I'm not really up on test matches but I assume no limit on overs and you go till all out. That right?

5 days, typically, given the forbearance of the rain gods.  Two innings each team.

My last line in the post you quoted there is pretty much what has happened so far. :)

It's always the hope that does you in...

Back in the day, when England were good at stuff, Australia beat them at cricket in England for the first time, and a local newspaper posted an obituary for English Cricket.  They said it had been cremated and the ashes taken back to Australia.   At the next tour of Australia by England,  some bright spark decided to offer up an urn containg them as a trophy and from there it went.  They usually play every two years, I think.

As an aside, I'm a big fan of the book.

I like how they said in the book that every society in the galaxy came up with a game named Krikkit, but the English were the only one to come up with a version so tasteless, lol.

So, they give the winner an urn full of ashes of....God knows what...every two years? Clever.

One wicket, exiting. Big comeback, the Aussies must be a bit deflated.

Especially as they would have had him out just before the end had they not wasted their last review on an obvious no-hoper.

Maybe a good thrashing was what England needed to wake them up.

Sadly, if all it took was a thrashing to wake up an English sports team, they would have the most wide awake teams in history. :(

Guess it should work for Vancouver teams too, but it doesn't seem to be.
