The Cup is a hard trophy to win, my team hasn't won it in more than 30 years. I think the fact that the Leafs have only made it out of the first round once in like 20 years is much more of an indictment than the Cup thing.

The Stanley Cup was not hard at all to win during the Original Six era for Toronto and Montreal, considering they had first dibs to sign players within a one hour drive of their respective cities (there was not many hockey players near Chicago, Boston, or NYC during this time).  Additionally, each team had a one in six chance to win the cup.

Toronto has not come close to winning a Stanley Cup since the league doubled in size, and Toronto lost their advantage of getting to draft players in the Southern Ontario area first. No cups in 56 years.

Yeah this supports my point. The Cup is much harder to win with more teams and more parity.

Here's a list of all the teams that have failed to win a cup in the last 20 years and how many years their drought has been. That's 60% of the league.

Toronto Maple Leafs: 56
Vancouver Canucks: 54
Buffalo Sabres: 54
Philadelphia Flyers:49
Arizona Coyotes: 45
New York Islanders: 40
Calgary Flames: 35
San Jose Sharks: 33
Edmonton Oilers: 34
Ottawa Senators: 32
Montreal Canadiens: 31
Florida Panthers: 29*
New York Rangers: 29
Nashville Predators: 26
Winnipeg Jets: 24
Dallas Stars: 24
Minnesota Wild: 22
New Jersey Devils: 20

Now do the Leafs suck? Yes of course. But they suck for so many more and richer reasons than "haven't won a Cup in a long time".

After this year, 1/3 of the league will not have won a Cup in the post-expansion era.

Toronto is the only Original Six team not to have won a Stanley Cup, post-expansion.

Montreal did it in 1968
Boston did it in 1970
New York did it in 1994
Detroit did it in 1997
Chicago did it in 2010

One day they'll win and we'll never hear the end of it.

You do.
No you seem to.  I’m not sure where this nonsense of only teams that have won a cup since expansion can be interesting or relevant comes from, but it’s illogical.  Something that has or happened for an organization 30, 40, 50 years ago is pretty much meaningless to present day.  All players, coaches and most front offices have nothing to do with what happened before they got there.  Your thesis is flawed.  But that’s ok.  That’s the great thing about sports, people can have many different takes.

My thesis is that Toronto only won so many Stanley Cups, since they not only had an unfair advantage during that period, but there was always a 1/6 chance to win the cup.  For over 50 years, the Leafs have never played in a Stanley Cup Final, yet alone won the cup.  They have been  perpetually mismanaged, and will not win a cup in the future.

I enjoy watching Leaf fans suffer.
