I think the average Russian is at least as aware of what their country did as the average Canadian is of Canada's contribution. Probably more.

What is sobering is the percentage of population some countries lost. Poland 17%, Belarus 25%

I culled my books but it was shocking that young Russians didn't know more.

Did you say you taught in Russia or something? Where/how did you meet these young Russians?

Not me. Been to St. Petersburg but that's it. It was my understanding that The Great Patriotic War was covered in their schools at least as well as WW2 is in ours. Maybe it's not so PC since the demise of the Soviet Union.

Ah sure.

I think the most interesting parts of history are pre-1812 and even pre-revolutionary wars.  There was more of a power balance between European powers and Indian nations but it was highly volatile and violent.  I suspect we don't study it in school because it was depressingly violent and because there are no innocent parties.

Is that the "Concert of Europe"? I think that was an early form of collective security. (which worked reasonably well)

I never heard of that.  I was referring to some history I read about the horrible time of Andrew Jackson, and the bloody guerilla warfare that resembles today's conflicts so much.

OH duh....lol. Sorry, I misread that, somehow. <smacks forehead>

For some dumbass reason I was thinking you meant (when you mentioned European powers) the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, when the Congress of Vienna set up Europe's first collective security agreement. They called the period the "concert of Europe" because it created a sort of Kissingerian "equilibrium" of sorts.

You were talking about history of the U.S. at the time of Andrew Jackson, then? the beginnings of the extermination/removal of the Indian tribes? (or has it gone over my head again? lol)

Yes, all of that - the roots of Jackson's hatred of Indians comes from a horrible time in N. American history where there was constant personal war against civilians on all sides.  Then he got elected - kind of the Trump of his day - and did the 'trail of tears'.

On the OTHER topic, I highly recommend World Order by Henry Kissinger

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Order_(book)

Some have a problem with him (I do) since he authorized civilian bombings in Viet Nam and so would find this book tainted (I don't).  You can find him odious but his mind is something to behold.   The book is about international peace treaties starting from

I get the idea that that treaty was what defined a "nation state" in today's usage of the word, no? I think we studied that in Western Civ II (a class at community college I took).

I understand Kissinger wrote another book that was specifically about the Congress of Vienna/Concert of Europe period. It had a long title and I think it was originally his Harvard doctoral thesis.

I won't get into a debate about Kissinger himself, that would get us a bit off topic. He certainly has his supporters and detractors.

I'm also familiar with his book "Diplomacy", of which I read a couple of chapters.

Interesting point. I think I should start a thread in one of the other categories about U.S. foreign policy.

One of you said you were into Rome, sort of. A good book to read about the collapse (or beginning of the collapse) of the republic is:

https://www.amazon.com/First-Man-Rome-Masters/dp/0061582417/ref=pd_sbs_14_1/145-0748140-6346265?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0061582417&pd_rd_r=03217910-36b0-11e9-a62e-358d4c5f0879&pd_rd_w=FKrdx&pd_rd_wg=MnZUR&pf_rd_p=588939de-d3f8-42f1-a3d8-d556eae5797d&pf_rd_r=RWW8R1PY1AS2N2V790NK&psc=1&refRID=RWW8R1PY1AS2N2V790NK

It's called The First Man in Rome and it's about Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla and their rise to power in the Roman Republic.
