So, Woody Allen had a 16 year old girlfriend in the 1970s ?  When he was 40 or so years old ?

Is this an issue ?  Beyond the 'yuck' factor, I want to know:

1) Was this legal at the time ?  (Probably)
2) Was this accepted at the time ? (Probably not, but maybe in some circles like entertainment yes)
3) Should we care today ?

Or is it just 'yuck' ?

So, one thing to point out... not all 16 year olds are the same.

I recall once upon a time that Sergei Fedorov was dating Anna Kournikova for a while.  He is 12 years older than her, and she was I think 16 or 17 at the time.   That sounds pretty mismatched, but remember that she was already a multimillionaire who'd been living on her own and traveling the world. She had a lot more life experience than a typical 16 year old who's living at home and going to high-school.

That said, yeah, it's pretty yuck.

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I also dated a man 12 years older than me, and it was actually very positive. We're still friends. Being with him helped me grow as a person and understand myself, sexually as well as in other ways.  He talked to me and listened to me like I was an adult, which was a completely new experience for me... he had a respect for me that I hadn't developed for myself yet.  I admire a lot of things about him... he set an example in the way he acted and treated people, and represented qualities I try to achieve.   He helped me grow and understand myself, and was never selfish or jealous.  And he was my rock when I cut ties with my family for good. I can't imagine what my life might have been like if he hadn't been in it. It would certainly have been poorer, though.

I doubt Woody Allen is nearly as good of a person.

Why ?

I for one don't like to assume I know public figures to that level.  It's too easy to manage a persona, far too easy.

Ummm....  because he had an affair with his wife’s daughter who was a teenager at the time, maybe?   The man is a pervert.

And allegedly molesting Dylan Farrow as well.

So, this Babi Christina Engelhardt person... she was 16 and apparently a successful model already, and she says she pursued him.  I am not sure how I feel about that.  As I mentioned above with Anna Kournikova... not all 16 year olds are the same. Some are still kids, others are much more mature than their age. I can imagine that Engelhardt might have had a lot more life experience than typical teenagers.

From that article...
Quote
She's proud of her teenage self as an up-by-her-bootstraps heroine who successfully beguiled a "celebrated genius." Even now, she holds herself largely responsible for remaining in the relationship as long as she did and for the frustration and sorrow that ultimately came with the liaison — one in which, by her description, she never held any agency. (Most experts would contend that such an uneven power dynamic is inherently exploitative.)

This is the conflict you find in this sort of thing... on the one hand she pursued him and "beguiled him", yet on the other hand she feels like she never had any agency in this.  A while back I skimmed over an essay penned by a woman who'd dated a much older man for several years... I believe she was in her early twenties while he was in his forties.  I couldn't tell whether she was mad at him or mad at herself.  She invested those years in a relationship that she knew wouldn't give her the things she wanted in life (he'd already had children and didn't want more) and isolated her from her peers. When it was over, she resented him for that.

I was just about 18 when I set my sights on the older guy I was interested in. I was very disinterested in guys my own age, felt they were immature idiots, felt like I was so much more clever than other people my age.  I was quite full of myself (and still am, obviously) and felt like a more mature man would be more my equal than the hapless mooks in my age group.  Like most people that age, I didn't know how much I didn't know. But at the same time, I feel like I was old enough and mature enough to make choices for myself.  I was on the brink of adulthood, old enough to work and own a car and live on my own if I'd wanted, and when you get to that point in your life you have to be be responsible for your own choices. Others can't stop you from making choices, for better or worse. I saw what I wanted, "I moved on it like a ****", and although in hindsight I was wrong about just about everything that made me want him in my life, it was still an experience that I'm very glad was part of my life.

Englehardt again:
Quote
Even with hindsight, though, she's unwilling to indict Allen, who declined to comment for this story. "What made me speak is I thought I could provide a perspective," she offers. "I'm not attacking Woody," she says. "This is not 'bring down this man.' I'm talking about my love story. This made me who I am. I have no regrets."

And allegedly molesting Dylan Farrow as well.

There is strong evidence that that was made up.

Seems like a contradiction.

There is a domain of opinions you aren't allowed to express in public, or at least won't be welcomed.

"I was a teenage girl dating a much older man and it was ok" is one of those.

Sorry but when it comes to middle aged adults dating teenagers it doesn't matter how mature the kid is, any onus is on the adult involved.

Yeah, I get that.  I still feel like there's a difference between the situation Engelhardt describes with Allen, vs a Roy Moore type situation where you've got a guy prowling around the shopping mall trying to seduce the kid working at the Dairy Queen.

Of course, but the teenager can still sometimes thrive in the situation.

Quote
A woman comedian was booed and two attendees kicked out after they protested the appearance of disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein at an event for young performers in lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.

Weinstein turned up with an entourage to watch Actor's Hour, a monthly event "dedicated to artists" at the Downtime bar in the Lower East Side.

One comedian, Kelly Bachman, called him out in her act onstage, referring to him as "the elephant in the room" and "Freddy Krueger."

"I didn’t know we had to bring our own Mace and **** whistles to Actor's Hour," said Bachman in a video posted to Instagram.

I was reading an article about actors who were blacklisted from Hollywood. There's still a bunch who are still blacklisted because they accused him of sexual misconduct.

I read an article recently in which a colleague of Ronan Farrow's talked about NBC's decision to kill Farrow's Weinstein story.

The decision to kill the story was absurd and indefensible. There had been considerable talk between NBC higher-ups and Weinstein's lawyers prior to the story being killed, and Farrow's colleague is of the belief that NBC killed the story because Weinstein's people had knowledge of NBC's Matt Lauer problem, and let them know that they'd leak that if NBC proceeded with Farrow's story.

I was referring to Mr Weinscum, not to any member of the forum!  I hope nobody on the forum dies in prison.
