From wind and wave to the page.
« on: November 16, 2018, 03:16:20 pm »
Somehow there was a bit of drift over on the Trump thread and the topic of sailing came up. So I thought I'd see if there was any interest in telling boat stories. I have a few and I'd like to hear others.

I'll throw one of mine in there. While working in Labrador one winter I met a gal and we hit it off. She said to me at one point "let's get out of this cold weather and go down south and spend some time on my friends sailboat". Who could resist that? Her friend's boat turned out to be a 47 foot, one off lapstrake, designed by Doug Peterson, and built specifically to compete in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. It was docked in Nassau after completion of the last race. First time I ever set foot on a sailboat. Beautiful wood from stem to stern with a 60 foot mast. I later met the owner who owned a yacht dealership in Marblehead Mass., and he sold me a C+C 35 and we headed south. I was determined to sail this boat back onto the same dock in Nassau where I first fell in love with sailing. She knew more about sailing, and I knew more about navigation. Between the two of us we made it. It took awhile, but we finally made it to that very dock around midnight local time. A long journey finally concluded and I never slept so soundly. But actually, the trip was just beginning.

“Real men have motors on their boats”

I’ve been sailing ...   it caused a lot of beer spillage as the sailboat heeled over into the wind.  And it was extremely slow.

Yeah you do have to learn how to keep a beer can more or less level. And boats don't heel into the wind.
That misunderstanding may be why you spilled your beer.

Maybe it wasn't your first beer.  I don't need a boat...

That is why they put the stove on gimbals. They are more often used to prop up you beer bottle than to cook.

Oooh I bet I'm not the first to have done this but I once put a beer can under the stove at dockside, forgot it was there, went for a spin and damn near dumped a pot of hot chilli into the bilge.
