Foreign Films and TV Shows
« on: May 31, 2021, 12:01:57 pm »
Does anyone know of any foreign films and/or TV shows--particularly French--that have English subtitles? And if they are on Netflix, Hulu or Prime that's even better.

I've been watching a Netflix original called Au Service de la France, AKA A Very Secret Service. After going through it again and again, I've got two whole pages of words and phrases in French, which I forgot, that the combination of the French talk and the English subtitles helped jogged my memory.

(I was thinking of re-learning French instead of playing around with a language I've never learned before, since I had 4 years of it in high school. Stuff like this helps.)

The Kingdom.

Crouching Tiger meets Walking Dead.  Beautifully filmed.  Zombies!  Sword fights.  Political intrigue.  Great show.  On NetFlix.

Hmmm...

Well I just watched Atlantics but it's West African french... sounds kind of nice to the ears but also hard to follow.

Bon Cop Bad Cop is supposed to be really good.  We watched it once and found it to be fun... rare Ontario/Quebec fish outta water thing with cops.

Lastly there are some CLASSIC French New Wave films on Crave right now I think... Breathless (I have never seen it)

This says there are good ones on Prime but I don't know them.  Also a blurb on there on learning French via movies

The Kings Choice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King%27s_Choice

When Norway is invaded in 1940, a constitutional Monarch who believes deeply that the monarch should not interfere in government is faced with having to override Parliament and resist or accept the Germans under a pretext that they are defending Norway from a British invasion.

An interesting but not well known part of WW2 history.

I also recommend the very long and very very slow Wings of Desire...

Excerpt...

The man sitting just had an accident and the one arriving behind him is an angel reading his thoughts... invisible... comforting him as he drains away.... directing his thoughts to the victim's best memories of life...

Some aren't affected by this.  Maybe it's my religious upbringing but I am hypnotized, maybe by hope in an afterlife.  And it brings me to tears without fail

Clearly itís Monday morning....    I neglected to see the French criterion.  My suggestion has zero French.  But you could try learning Mandarin.

This is how far behind the times I am.

Just finished Sons of Anarchy and now started It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
