Experimental Music Thread !
« on: November 27, 2017, 06:18:12 am »
Some people think I am weird but I like to challenge myself in every way.  With art, film, music that means trying something new.  I don't know what peoples' regular music tastes on here are but some guesses might be:

SirJohn -> BTO, or Eagles Greatest Hits
Cyber -> Penguin Café Orchestra
JMT -> Fleetwood Mac, or James Taylor
Kimmy -> Tegan & Sara

etc.

I am an omnivore.  I like all these bands, and solo artists and more.  As such, I declare this music thread to put out music that is different or challenging !

First post is Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgard_Var%C3%A8se

Supposedly he inspired Frank Zappa to be a musician.  (I'm severely Zappa challenged, so I'm listening to the Zappa catalogue from the beginning to get caught up.)

Here is his piece ionisation:

Amériques:

Experimental classical, kind of like an extension of where Charles Ives was going with his jarring, non-uniform classical pieces.

This is Jaco Pastorius, widely considered one of the best & most innovative bass players ever.  This is my favorite thing I've heard from him in my limited listening.  The crazy stuff starts around 2:30 and the ending is epic.  He's covering a Jimi Hendrix song here (kinda lol).

My new favorite band, these videos are amazing:

I had both of them - the greatest hits. Also have several live performance videos from the Eagles. :-P
Also big fan of Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, John Denver, Willie Nelson and Loreena Mckennitt.
When I was younger my favorite records was a collection of a dozen LPs featuring the world's greatest waltzes.

Oh, and also like Fleetwood Mac and James Taylor, so there.

How's that for eclectic.

I'm feeling a lot of microaggression right now, so I'm going to retreat to my safe space for a while.   :(

Kimmy is more into the "new country" scene me thinks.  A good ol' catchy love song gets her toes a tappin'!

Ive heard of all those bands except the one you picked for me. I’ve been listening on Spotify to different thing by them for the last half hour, so I guess you were right but I didn’t know it yet.

MH I think you'd be a Luther Vandross or Jon Secada guy.  Maybe some tasteful soft-rock (90's Bryan Adams anyone?) at a moderate noise level, treble and bass lowered slightly to push those mids in the mix, on a quality but not-too-elaborate sound system with well-researched magnetically shielded speakers to avoid distortion or picking up any unwanted feedback or fizzle.  Maybe when you're feeling a little dangerous slide on some Doobie Brothers, or cover the kids ears and blast some Alanis Morrisette to head-bang to.

When the wife & kids are away, you break out the old vinyl, carefully slide out your favorite Chicago album from its sleeve and hold it on its edges with your fingertips (careful not to leave any fingerprints on the surface).  As you prepare your favorite medium roast coffee (whole milk, not cream), you grab that swiffer duster & brush away any dust/debris on your LP player, re-calibrate the needle like you recently read on engadget.com, & drop the needle slowly to the first track, while popping open your laptop to enjoy a few insightful hours of political debate on your favorite forums, intermittently jotting down ideas for your next podcast...

It was a wild guess but well, good...
