Eating culture (or what are you eating)
« on: June 25, 2017, 01:32:35 pm »
How Canadian is this?

A friend of a friend (first nation guy, no less) takes down a moose.

Ends up moving so gifts the moose liver to my friend.

So, the wife and I get this moose liver as this friend and another friend come over for dinner.

To make a long story short, this was our spread:

- Moose liver mousse (french/italian style) with homemeade rye bread as the vehicle to mouth
- Moose liver with a fig, bacon, mushroom compote
- Local (Nanoose Bay) sea asparagus salad
- Sumac infused asian pear and cucumber salad (ok this is a Persian dish)

Love to show pics but not practical on this forum.

I love living in this golden age of globalization: blend of culinary techniques and ingredients that allow us to eat so much from thousands of kilometers away.

So, what are you eating?

You're way too fancy for me.

Today I'm going to have either some pho or some Vietnamese vermicelli soup.  I might change my mind before then.

Okay, I had Indian food instead.  That is Indian foods last and final chance.

My favorite thing is Mexican right now.  Kim City has a bit of a Latino community, perhaps as a result of migrant workers who come here to work at the orchards. There are a few Mexican restaurants here that go above and beyond the typical fast food experience, and you get the added excitement of high-energy ladies yelling at each other in Spanish as they prepare food.  Muy bueno!

I'm in Winnipeg right now.  If you like Winnipeg for no other reason, like it because there's practically any kind of food you can imagine in a locally owned restaurant.

Why?  What did you have?

Indian isn't my favourite but it's yummy once in a while.

I've gone to two different well regarded restaurants with mostly Indian customers.  I sampled everything.  It's just not for me.  I love Thai and Vietnamese - but I just can't love Indian.

Ah yeah. My wife was in Winnipeg for conference a few years ago and said the restaurants were fantastic.

I'm pregnant right now (yay that was my CPE announcement), and I'm all over the place with what I want to eat.

For a while it was cooked Kale on EVERYTHING.  Then suddenly I can't stand the sight of kale anymore and 3 bunches of organic kale ended up in the compost.

Now I'm on to tomato and onion together.  I'm having tomato onion sandwiches, tomato and onion nachos, tomato and onion (and cucumber) salad... you name it.  No honestly... please do, I  could use some ideas.

I've also developed a sweet tooth which I don't normally have.  I think it's because I can't drink coffee or alcohol, it's become my vice.

The baby was unplanned btw, but a welcome surprise after the dust settled and it all sank in.

Congratulations, but I would not want to bring a baby into a world of NDP/GP minority governments.  ;D

Good for you for getting off kale-  I ate it for a while in my cancer days but then I was not so sure if it really is that good for you.

I wonder what it could do to a fetus although with all the alcohol you will need to drink to suffer under the new political regime I think that will be the least of your placentas' worries.

Are you kidding?!  With increased class sizes and better childcare on the horizon, I would 3 more if I weren't so old.  In fact, I'd say the fetus should be joining me in a toast to celebrate.

I'm glad you beat your cancer.  You're not bad to have around for a Christie Clark supporter.

Lastly, tomato and onion go really well with bean enchiladas.
