Ok, so I am trying a "Green Fairy" martini.

I have had a bottle of absinthe around for years.  Made by the local Kim City Distillery Co, I'm not sure how this stuff stacks up against "name brands".  The reason it has lasted me so long is that it's literally undrinkable.   I bought it years ago to try the "ritual" with the sugar cube and the slotted spoon and fire and water... undrinkable.   The anise/licorice taste is so overpowering.

But lately I recall seeing a recipe for a martini which involved swishing a bit of absinthe around your glass, then pitching the absinthe before you add the martini.

So I did that.  A little splash of absinthe swirled around the glass and pitched.Stirred, not shaken, in the thrifty drink mixing pitcher Cybercoma recommended.  A "Kimtini", with akvavit instead of vodka, as I've been making lately.

The result?

Still undrinkable.

Even the residue of the absinthe left clinging to the glass is so overpowering that it dominates the whole Kimtini.

I mean, it's not 100% awful, in the sense that I'm still drinking it, but at this point I'm basically drunk enough to drink pure gasoline. So that's not a powerful endorsement.  The Kimtini is 1000% better without the touch of absinthe in it.

Oy...  that sounds awful Kimmy.

But it does remind me of a great martini I like to make...

Gingertini (DO NOT add absinthe)
2oz gin
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz ginger syrup

Shake with ice and pour into martini glass.

Sigh....

Don’t shake gin. For the love of god.....

But at least that’s the kind of drink that you’re supposed to shake because of the lemon juice.

So there are some exceptions to this commandment?  ;D

Haha it’s not a commandment. You should generally only shake things with citrus or egg in them. They say gin bruises, so I joke that only animals shake gin. But I can’t tell much of a difference. It loses some of its punch. Tastes almost flat when you shake it. Kind of like wine that’s been open and sitting in the fridge a couple days. But who cares, really? Do what you like. I just think if you follow the rules when you’re learning, you’ll a) make generally better drinks, and b) be able to tell more quickly when drinks are “off” or god forbid, bad.

I don’t disagree with you....  i read an article about the gin issue.  Makes sense that citrus and eggs would need shaking.

I am going to make 2 cocktails with nice gin...  1 shaken, 1 stirred and I’ll report back.  I don’t want to do anything that might jeopardize the taste of the gin!!

I like single malt Scotch, and believe it or not, the duty free in Dubai airport has a nice selection at about half the prices of say the duty free's elsewhere. So I shop around when I go through there and buy a new one just to try it out. And so I landed home with a jar of Smokehead. Lordy Jesus, I sipped that and thought I had been submersed in a peat bog that was being ravished by a forest fire. If that idea appeals then try it out, or I'll happily mail you the almost full 40 pounder.

Haha   ;D

I have a bottle of Smokehead in my cabinet!  Also, a bottle of Peat monster, which is peaty as well, but maybe a bit more refined than Smokehead.

I like to sip Scotch neat, but with the Smokehead I pour it over a couple of cubes, give it a swirl, and that eases the smoke part to my liking. I've also mixed a bit of it straight into my little recipe for BBQ sauce and give some chicken breasts or steaks a wee swim in that for a while  before it hits the grill.

Ok, I'll play.

Last night, we were blowing off steam after some bad news so it was drinking and smoking (sad to say now, but whatever).  I tried a beer but it didn't go down.  Then a shot of Appleton Rum.  Ew.  I had to fall back on my old favourite, mixed with Carnation Hot Chocolate.

Don't worry, Michael. It's ok.

I invented some drinks this summer.  One was a big glass of ice-cold ice tea made from generic Superstore powdered ice tea mix, with a hefty dose of vermouth rosso added. A second was a big glass of ice-cold lemonade made from Country Time powdered lemonade mix, with a shot of Campari.  Another was a big glass of ice-cold lemonade made from Country Time powdered lemonade mix, with a shot of gin.

I didn't mention it at the time because I knew cybercoma would laugh at me.

So I say enjoy your powdered hot chocolate and liqueur, and don't let cybercoma bring you down.
