Does anyone here play "Go"? If you don't  know what I'm talking about (and therefore will be answering "no") here it is:

We used to play "Othello" when we were kids, which I think is like a dumbed-down version of Go.

I've heard Go has obtained some sort of mythical status as a test of intellect... I recall somebody claim that Japanese kids grow up smarter than North American kids because they play Go and it develops their brains to think in ways that playing with Nerf pistols just can't.

Yikes. I would expect that learning to play go develops certain skills wrt spatial visualization which could mean better results on certain types of tasks like IQ tests. I don't see it as something that generally increases intelligence. They say the same about learning an instrument or a 2nd or 3rd language - but the latter two are more useful social skills in addition to the intellectual boost.

East asian kids grow up smarter because their parents put a strong emphasis on education, like Jewish parents do.  Asian kids aren't born with better math skills and the natural ability to play the piano or violin, parents force their children to learn these skills from a young age.

I think it's rooted in Confucianism and Taoist philosophy/culture.

Maybe, but also:

1) We tend to only see Asians who are ambitious and internationally successful over here, right ?
2) Despite the vaunted Chinese advantage, the US still is the source of innovation even if it's immigrants that are doing it
3) It's impossible to isolate success factors for upbringing objectively
4) You can still encourage excellence and make observations about laziness and challenging toys despite my assertion in 3)
5) Being better at math, succeeding at games, winning in business is a shitty metric of success if you grow up to be a broken rich person with no friends

My five cents/sense.

I first saw this game in the movie "A Beautiful Mind", looked up what it was and bought a board.  But no one ever wanted to try it with me.

Do you play it?
